Black Loyalists websites
Following are a variety of websites devoted to Black Loyalists ... meaning those blacks who fought in the American Revolutionary War on behalf of England. During and after the war, many of those settled in Nova Scotia, Ontario and New Brunswick, based on promises they were given for freedom from slavery and land grants. Canada granted freedom and land to many of those soldiers, but sold others back into slavery in the U.S., and either reneged on the land grant promises or gave them inferior lots far from towns, forcing many to simply abandon those lots.
Many people think that Canada was a land free from racism, oppression and discrimination ... nothing could be further from the truth. But that's a discussion for another day.
I hope these links will be useful to anyone who is searching for their Black Loyalist ancestors. Many military records and land records still exist from this period, making it fairly easy to document the lives of many.
All the best in your research.
