In Response To: WAS NEW CANAAN REAL? BLACK SETTLEMENT IN ONTARIO? ()
I remember stories my Grandfather told me of New Canaan. It was located on the Gesto Road between Walker Road and Village of Gesto near the Brush Side Road. His name was Gerald Calhoun he owned farm land 1 mile off the Arner Town Line (I grew up beside his farm) He grew up a few miles south of the Gesto Rd. I remember he told me he went to school in New Canaan, I think grade 2 and on even though he was white. My Great Grandfather was a road superintendent and knew the area well. I remember my Grandfather was very good friends with the woman who ran the Black Heritage Museum in Amherstburg (80's early 90's). He helped her with information on grave sites and building locations probably info he knew from his father . I believe my Great Grandfather helped repair buildings on this site(not sure years though), Back then it was just farm families in the area. From what I remember hearing and reading, there was a store on the Gesto Road, my mother seems to remember that as well. I remember my Grandfather telling me it was far enough from Amherstburg so bounty hunters from the USA could not find it. I believe a the Davis family has roots to this community among others. I have googled co-ordinates and they come up, someone in another post put exact ones.
