In Response To: Thanks Lisa .......Slavery in Canada ()
From initial posting in 2004
With the Act pf the Northwest Territory (1787), out of which came the State of Ohio (1803), I believe that my surviving ancestors were able to make their way back into Ohio from Canada during the period leading up to the War of 1812. I believe they were in search of their relatives who were adopted by the Shawnee and who were living in the area of what becomes Champaign County, Ohio (1807).
Of course much more research in this area will be required, but I can't thank you enough Lisa. Your materials have given me a possible reason and a for-sure starting point on how my people came to Ohio in the very early 1800's.
The Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) has created a new lineage society (2016) "The Society of the Families of the Old Northwest Territory" for those who can prove descent from persons who resided in the (ONT) prior to 1787. Family History, Genealogical Research and DNA testing since this initial posting in 2004 has proven my ancestral LaForce lines to qualify me as a Charter Member. Here is my acceptance letter.
