Re: Charleston Harbor, SC

Hi, I know its been some months since this thread was replied too but I did a little checking on your family.
I don't know if you have looked at the 1840 census of Maryland or not but there is an African American Joseph Anderson living in Baltimore, Maryland. According to this census there is 1 male between the age of 36-55, 1 male between 10-24, 1 male under 10, 1 female between 36-55, 2 females under 10.
In the 1851 census that you spoke about, Joseph is 64 and Mary is 56. Two daughters are Mary age 20 and Bathemia is 14. Son Livas is 16.
After looking at this closely, this Joseph that is in the 1840 census could possibly be the same Joseph that is in the 1851 census.
The only difference is that one male child is not in 1851 census. He could be older enough to live outside the home.
In 1840, the daughter Mary would have been 9, Livas would have been 5 and Bathemia would have been 3. Joseph would have 53 with Mary, his wife being 45. All those ages fit with the 1840 census of 1851.
Now something to think about is that if Joseph was actually Livas, Sr could it be possible that he chose to use Joseph at some point? Also being that Livas is such an unusual name, could that name have been his 'real' name that he bought over from Africa?
Seeing that you stated that he was possibly never a slave, I wonder where he got the name Joseph Anderson from?
Anyways, there is another African American Jospeh Anderson living in Maryland in 1820.
Also, could Bathemia be Catherine?
To confirm all this, you may possibly find court records in Baltimore and in Canada. Also, you might want to look at any border crossing records between 1840 and 1851.
