I've experienced limited success by searching newspapers (via microfilm) that were published in the county/community where my relatives lived.

You may also want to check local records, i.e. coroners records; or check to see if the county maintained a death enumeration; and also funeral home records (if they survive) can be valuable. Inquire which funeral homes may have been in operation during the time frame you seek information.
