Check the district clerk's office. It is my understanding that a clerk went around every year to inventory slaves, assign value, note ages and distinguishing marks etc. This was documented so that taxes so taxes could be calculated.

Also, have you checked the probate box? Sometimes this gave way more information about assets and inventories. I think the probate boxes are at the courthouse.

Also, have you looked to see if the slave owner had any insurance on his slaves?
