Dowdle Rod

Good morning,
In the search for ancestral enlightenment, I have lost my South Carolina ancestors, Allen & Carrie Dowdle in the 1920s. I’ve been researching my maternal grandmother’s people and have located them in the 1900, 1910 & 1930 Census; even have Allen’s death certificate. On every census, their last name is spelled differently (Dial, Dowell, and Doudle) and they are in a different counties; I’m assuming they migrated to whatever farm needed hands. I’ve tried to look up disasters in Cherokee County, SC to see if the family would have to flee the area, but nothing. I tried agricultural censuses, but considering they didn’t own their land, I couldn’t find anything. How is it I can find them all the other years, but not the 1920’s? What am I missing? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
