Re: Rebecca Lipscomb, Cumberland Co, VA

What information can you find on the children? Do any of their records (e.g. marriage, deeds, death) identify either of the parents' names? Did Henry deed them land, or did they "buy" land once owned by him? Did the children ever pay taxes, or did someone pay taxes for them?

You can estimate Becky's age by ages of her children. Does she ever appear in the free registers herself, or indirectly through her children?

Does he free Becky and her children together or separately? The reason I ask is that Virginia laws regarding legal emancipations changed over time. The laws stipulated who could be freed, by whom, and the conditions or circumstances under which they could be freed. Thus for example, if the law in effect in 1802 said Becky had to be at least at the age of majority, or lets say 18, then you subtract that age from the date, and get an approximate birth year for her. Thus the latest she could have been to be eligible to be freed in 1802 would have been 1784. She may have been born earlier, and you can check this against the years when her children were born.
