Thank you for your response. I am a white descendant of Rebecca. She is my great-great-great-great-grandmother. Her owner/partner, Henry Lipscomb, is part of the large, well-documented Lipscomb family of Virginia. I would like to know who owned Rebecca before Henry acquired her. Ideally, of course, I would like to be able to trace her family back to its origins. I can think of no other easily searchable source of information than the personal-property tax rolls. Is there some other central source of information on individual slaves? --Sally Phillips
