Thanks for the suggestions. We did think about three of the things that you mentioned: 1. that Henry could have moved on to Canada but never pursued the thought. We will go back and look at migration patterns from Ohio to Canada during that time period. 2. Passing for white also dawned on us but we can't find any white Kinley's that fit his general profile during that time period. 3. Military enlistment - several of our family members did think about him joining a branch of the military and pretty aggressively pursued that lead. They didn't find anything but maybe its time to revisit that possibility.

Right now we are leaning towards one of three scenarios: (1) he went back to Tennessee to try to find his mom (fits in with your slave theory) (2) he went back to Virginia to try to find his mom (again could possibly fit into your slave theory) or (3) he is listed with the Embree family for the duration but for whatever reason may not be included in their census information. That being said you've given us food for thought and we will go investigate some of the options you've provided.
