Charles Norfleet: Perquimans County, NC
My brick wall is my great-great grandfather, Charles Norfleet. Have traced him through census records beginning in 1900, where he was living with his family in Elizabeth City, NC (Pasquotank Co.), through his death in the 1920s in Yonkers, NY. My problem is finding Charles Norfleet before 1900. I have a copy of the marriage license for Charles Norfleet and Sarah F. Price from 1881. According to the information on the license, Charles was 27 and was from Perquimans Co. His parents are shown as Arthur Butt and Grizzelle Reed – both deceased.
I searched census records for the name Arthur Butt, and was able to locate an Arthur Butt (white) living in Perquimans Co. in 1850 with his family. According to the 1850 Slave Schedule, he owned 4 slaves. By the 1860 census, he and his family had moved to Pasquotank Co. He does not appear on the 1860 Slave Schedule. I also searched for the name Grizzelle Reed. I found a Grizzelle Reed, age 38, on the 1870 census in Perquimans Co. In the same household was a Charles Reed, age 14.
There are a great number of black Norfleets in Perquimans County in 1870 and 1880, but I’ve have not been able to locate Charles. The closest match I’ve found is several Charles Norfleets (born in the 1850s) living in Edgecombe Co.
We are curious about Charles Norfleet’s surname. If he identified his parents accurately on the marriage certificate, why doesn’t he share a name with one of them? My family and I have speculated that Charles may not have been born with the surname Norfleet, and that perhaps he was taken in by Norfleets and adopted their name. Any advice on how to find out more about Charles Norfleet would be greatly appreciated.
