Re: Harris Family-Brick Wall

Hi, I think the 1880 census gives you some clear clues - if it is to be believed. First - all of the children in the household are listed as born MS - which would place her (Jane, Jennie) in MS in 1860. Second the childrens father is listed as born NC. Since the surname is Harris - have you checked slave schedules for Harris slaveholders in the area? I took a quick look - and nextdoor Itawamba county has 49 slaves owned by Harris'es. On the chance that a Harris might have come from NC with slaves - there are a few white Harris' families from NC in that county, 1850 census. Worth checking out. Since William is listed as born 1870 (he is not listed as son - probably because they forgot to fill that in since he is listed on the next page) - but at least that could give you a time period for her widowing. Perhaps 1869? You have stated that you believe father's name is Jerry Harris. Where did this information come from? Interesting puzzle - I hope other folks will join in with suggestions. Denise
