On the contrary, Ed, your info about Allen J Dobbins and James Dobbins is very helpful. Sadly, the SC Dept of Arch. & Hist. replied to me 2/7/07 that their researcher " carefully checked Newberry County General Index to Estate Papers A-Z, 1785-1985, and could find no Dobbins with a given name beginning with or having an initial of A". Of course, they cashed my check. They also attached a long list of persons/organizations willing to do further research for a fee...higher fee, I'm sure.

Don't mind me. I'm just sighing all over the place over this because it's apparent by the further wording of their reply to me that they confused the black A. DOBBINS with the person I identified as the possible slaveowner, A.J. DOBBINS. Not sure if I want to go another round with them or not. Thanks, Ed.
