Re: emancipated Mendenhalls of NC
In Response To: Re: emancipated Mendenhalls of NC ()
Kay & Camille, From the OGS Quarterly Journal, Vol 45., No. 3, September 2005 there is a listing....part 4, of Blacks immigrating into Ohio between 1861-1863. Among those listed are Delilah, Geo C. Fremont, Herbert & William Mendenhall. They are registered in Delaware Twp., Delaware County, Ohio. A quick glance at the 1870 Census for Ohio and Delaware Co. reveals Mendenhall's from NC. They are indexed as both white and black. ex. Herbert is indexed as white, but the actual image shows he and family listed as "M". In 1870 this family includes, wife Celia, children William, Anna, Lillian born in NC and Mable, Catherine, George, Frederick & Franklin born in Ohio. You have probably already seen this, but I found it interesting the Mendenhall's were still being emancipated from NC as late as the 1860's. Hope this is of some help. Art Thomas
