Re: Mary DORTRY, Henry County, Ga

Hello Denise :D

I don't really know. I am wondering though if Jane Marable is possibly a sister of Betsy or Daniel? Jane Marable married to an Elias Howard in 1873 Oglethorpe County ( Oglethorpe County Marriage Account Book & Marriage Licences of Freedman 1854-1874)and I find the family in 1880 same county, her son Hinton was 18.
I've not been able to find Mr. Heard and family after 1870.

Frances MARABLE had 8 slaves in 1860 Oglethorpe County.
Charles Dougherty had 37 slaves in 1850, Clarke County
James DOTTERY had had 1 slave 1850, Clarke County
(I have my 1860 notes somewhere)
In 1870 the only black family with any any varient spelling of DORTRY, ect was Daniel and Betsey in both Oglethrope and Clarke County. It would seem there would be more.

There is a Solomon JENNINGS in Oglethorpe County who had both a Jane and a Daniel in a will dated pre-1870 (per email from another researcher...exact date not given). In 1860 census living nextdoor to his widowed wife Nancy was a free black couple named Jeff and Juda Jennings, ages 90 and 80. Solomon and Nancy were born in VA between 1772-1778.
Both widow Nancy and son Thomas also had slaves in 1860 Slave Schedule.

Vera
