DOBBS, Joe in OK
Hello in 2013,
Here's hoping we all find those elusive ancestors this year.
I need your assistance in locating date & place of death for my g/g/grandfather Joe Dobbs, aka Joseph Dobbs, J.J. Dobbs. DOB 1858, POB Cobb County GA. DOD & POD unknown. He was a land owner & businessman in Oklahoma, 1890- on.
After serving in the army he settled in OK. Homestead #4356, dated Feb 27, 1895, Kingfisher, OK TY. Prior to that, he & family are counted in June 1890 "First Territorial Census of Oklahoma. Sept. 30, 1890, his stationary reads, ( J.J. Dobbs, First Class Barber (opposite Wickmiller's Drug Store). The last I have of him is a handwritten letter dated, July 5. 1901, Hennessey, OKTY, addressed to, Commissioner, Dept. of Interior, requesting the reopening of his disability claim.
I did register him with Oklahoma Genealogy Society, First Families of the Twin Territories, # 573. Ancestry has no record of him, nor any of the other online resources. Any suggestions on how I can get copies of the pages of First Families of the Twin Territories Lineage Book, 2nd edition.
Also have a pamphlet stating " Abraham Seay (Kingfisher, OK) also took actions which improved conditions for blacks in Oklahoma Territory" Does any know specifically what he did & the AA people by name that he took this action for? One last questions, on line I found "History of Newspapers In Oklahoma" Curry Ballard of Lan--- has identified 78 newspapers owned & edited by African American in Oklahoma between 1889--------. Did any of these newspapers survive? Any record of them? How can they be traced?
I am open to any & all suggestions.
Sincerely,Dolores Dobbs Reece
