Re: ALTEMUS family ~ Plaquemine LA

I looked briefly at this and did not find that much that can help you. If I were you I would start with the the Johnson side to try to get a history of Kisiah before digging in to the Albermes side, somehow I feel it may it is just more difficult if you don't know whether you're ancestors were noted as white or black or mulatto on the censuses.

Also I don't have, so please look at the censuses at to see if there is more info hidden.

You said Virginia Johnson was living with the family in 1930, but you meant 1920 right? I would probably start with her. In 1910 there is a family in Iberville that contains both Thomas and Virginia, but where Thomas' wife is named as Mary (and also another Martha Johnson, maybe a sister of Virginia). Agewise Mary somewhat mathces Kisiah's age. Could that be your family? If so could Mary be a second name for Kisiah? And then Mary Johnson in 1900 was not living with them? Agewise Mary would be 23 yours old in 1910, old enough to be married living with her own husband in 1910.

You may know that on 1910 the census enumerators were supposed to note for married couples how many times they had been married (may look like 'M' squared if married two times). What does it say on this 1910 family? I may be wrong about that 1910 census, but I still think Virginia in 1920 should be able to provide more clues.

If Thomas and Mary are indeed your Thomas and Kisiah, then why is Virginia not noted as a sister to Mary in 1920? Maybe Mary and Virginia were half sisters (in 1900 Mary is noted as being born before Thomas' and Kisiah's marriage).

In any case if you think that Thomas and Mary in 1910 is your family I would try to find out what happened to Martha and Virginia, did your family hear anything about any Martha or Virginia? You mentioned a lot of sources above but not social security applications. Both Virginia and Martha would be in their 30s when Social Security came about, if you can find their social security applications you may get more information about Kisiah's maiden name. I was not able to find any Kisiah in 1880 that is a good match to your gr gr grandmother. But that may be because Kisiah was already married in 1880 with another surname, that's why I asked about that 1910 family.

Regarding the marriages: Did I get that right that you have not found Mary's marriage to Edward Albermes or Kisiah's marriage to Thomas Johnson? If not are there any city directories here that can help you? If you don't find the marriages then city directories (provided that they do exist for your areas) still give you an idea of when they did get married, and also if anyone was listed before the marriages with the pre-marriage family.

Also further down on that 1900 census page there is a family of Mose Johnson, have you done any research on him? The names of the children seem to match names you've mentioned (Thomas, Virginia). If you could find Mose in 1880 then maybe you will also find Thomas (Mary's father).

And on there is a Thomas Johnson born 1861 who passed away in 1919 (parents William and Emmeline), any idea if that is your Thomas?

These are just guesses though, unfortunately there are a lot of possibilities here that you need to look through and I was not able to breakthrough in any way. Hopefully you can continue this and make progress, you sounded a bit discouraged. I assure you though that even if your family contains musicians, politicians, CEOs, actors, pro sports players, forbes 400 members or ANY kind of celebrities YOU will still be the family hero when you solve this puzzle and tell the elderly in your family :)
