Thank you for responding to my post.

I've tried to search county records but I am not having much success because I do not have the names of James' parents.

I'm not sure when James was freed nor when he migrated from South Carolina to Pine Level, AL, but his oldest child was born in 1861 in AL.

In the 1870 census in Pine Level, AL, James is listed as having property. I have not been able to locate property in his name.

I searched the General US Land records and do not see where he is listed as having land.
