William Miles / G Grandfather
Several years ago I obtained my grandfather Abe Miles death cert. This is where I found out the names of my ggrandparents. Until then all I knew was that my family was from AR. The death cert. stated that my gfather was born in GA. (actually, he was born in AL per 1900 census). My uncle also had their father's name (my ggrandfather) William Miles on the death certificate.
I took this info. and searched for William Miles in the 1880 GA census. Made Many trips to NARA, and to Newberry Library. At Newberry they had an GA index book, and we could not find him there. I have also checked Family History library film. Someone told me to check AL and I eventually found my ggrandparents in the 1880 census. Russell County, AL, William Miles with wife Uneus?(Eunice) The children are listed, with my grandfather Abe, and his brother Steve that I knew about. The rest of the children I know nothing about. I have bad images of that census taker who for several pages of that census stated that everyone, and their mother, and father was born in AL. My grandfather's age is stated two years older than he was also. I assume he looked at them and guessed their ages.
Later, I also purchased the CD AA in the 1870 Census, and he is not there. I also have 1870 census index for AL etc. and he is not there either. 1870 is my brick wall, and I would love info. on another direction to go. My real problem is that I let my three aunts die (ages 82, 88, and the oldest died last at 92)before I began this genealogy quest. I know nothing of my grandmother, only her name, and that she married my grandfather Abe.
