Like you I am up late. I read your review twice and will probably read it many more times. Each read magnified your years of scholarly research on American slavery and unfortunately magnified how much I have to learn. Although I often refer to Dr. Burnside's book in my own research, I realized how much I missed in reading Spirits of Passage. Most compelling were your comments on the motivation/psychology and decision of European and African nations "to get into the slave business." Indeed, it is a theme that resonates throughout Spirits of Passage. In the end everyone, every nation who profited from the slave trade was culpable.
