Re: [Research] the Eskridge plantations

Greetings Mr. Hanks,

I just received a copy of your book "Akee Tree"
yesterday. I was especially excited to receive this
book because my people are from Eskridge and Duck Hill
as well.

My great-great-grandmother Pauline Bennet
(b.1883-d.1951) and her half-sister Lucinda Drake
(b.1890-d.1973) are both from Eskridge, MS. They had
children in Duck Hill, MS.

I have records for both that say that their mother's
name is Caroline, but they have different fathers.
Caroline died when the two girls were very young. My
lineage stops there, so their history during slavery
is lost on me. I even spoke with Lucinda's 89 year old
son and his grandmother is a mystery to him as well.
Unfortunately, for this line, I have no 1870 or 1880
census data.

The drawn portraits in your book really caught my
eye...they look remarkably similar in style to a
drawing that I inherited from Pauline's daughter
Carrie:

Were drawing like this specific to Eskridge?

Your work is amazing. I will keep reading to see if I
can identify any possible connections.

Hope to hear from you soon,
---Karmella Haynes
