Yes! The characters are flawed, yet, 3-dimensional.

In the case of Marcel, his sister and contemporaries; to come to puberty with raging hormones and have your destiny mapped out for you, cruelly, and determined, speaks strongly of antebellum New Orleans. To think you got it 'going on' only to realize that you are more contained and enslaved than you ever imagined.

This book is very good. So far, Anne Rice's racial identity does not get in the way of telling this story. I'm at volume 2.
