In this Encore Booknotes from 1999, author Randall Kenan discusses his book "Walking on Water: Black American Lives at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century." Mr. Kenanís book chronicles the lives of African Americans in the post-Civil Rights era of the nineties. In preparing the book, Mr. Kenan travelled the country for a period of six years and interviewed nearly two hundred African Americans. He starts his journey on Martha's Vineyard, travels through New England, then heads west to visit Chicago, Minneapolis, Las Vegas and Seattle. Mr. Kenan ends his journey in North Carolina, where he recounts his own family's story.

Author's Bio:

Randall Kenan is the author of "A Visitation of Spirits" and "Let the Dead Bury Their Dead." His works of nonfiction include "James Baldwin" and "A Time Not Here: The Mississippi Delta." He has written for The Nation, Spin, The New York Times Book Review, Callaloo, and Emerge.
