Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color

Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color is the first book in a series, about information I researched and documented over 30 years> The Project started when my mother and I agreed to document her family history in 1978. We were living in Oakland California, having moved from Pennsylvania. My mother was our Family Oral Historian, whose stories intrigued me (The oldest daughter), as a child. The first book I wrote came from the numerous books, articles, and records in my possession, and it was titled Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color. Since than I have written three more, Pieces of the Quilt The Mosaic of an African American Family, Black Minqua The Life and Times of Henry Green, and now the Revised Edition of Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color.

In this Second Edition the Chronicles of those like Mary and Patty Bowden (Indentured Servants to George Washington's Family), Charles and Ambrose Lewis (Revolutionary War Soldiers), as well as Rawley and Robert Pinn (fought at The Siege of Yorktown), are updated.

The ancestry of Mary Bowden (b. 1730, d. aft. 1800), is revealed in this update to her life and times. She went kicking and screaming to George Washington's Family Plantation, when she was seven years old. As soon as Mary was old enough, she ran away. They spent money and time to find her and the second time she ran away was after her daughter, Patty's birth. The Washington's Indentured Patty out at Birth, and shortly afterward Mary ran away, and stayed gone for four years. She did not take Patty, as she would have been imprisoned or hung, for stealing valuable property. The father of Mary Bowden is revealed, as well as his prominent Nephew. Remember this, Westmoreland County was known as Presidents Row.

Besides the Chronicles the book also contains a section on DNA Testing for Genealogy, and a How To for Beginning Genealogy Researchers. The section has tips for persons researching Mult-Racial Lines. There is also a Glossary of DNA Terms.
