For the 1950's I would use the term de-colonization.

The 'rivalry' between the Hutu's and Tutsi's had been in existence long before the arrival of and colonization by the Eurpoeans, certainly long before the 20th century. That rivalry MAY have even played a prominent role in the matter of the ability of the Europeans to 'colonize' that area of Africa.

Just an opinion.
