If you've watched "Roots", Kunta Kenteh was from Senegambia (a region comprised of Senegal & The Gambia). There are many different ethnic groups in this region. Kunta Kenteh was a Mandinka (of the Mande language group). There are also Wolof, Fula, and several other ethnic groups in the region. Senegambia is about 75% Muslim, 15% Traditional Religions, and 10% Christian. The Gambia has a socialist government ruled by a military officer that took control of the country in a military coup. I'm not very certain about the government of Senegal. The main agricultural export of both countries is groundnut (peanuts).
