Re: Mende, Temne, Kru ancestry
In Response To: Re: Mende, Temne, Kru ancestry ()
My brother, Claude, was recently tested through the DNA process and it was determined that our paternal ancestry is from the Kru people of Liberia. My father moved from North Carolina to New Jersey in 1929 and his father was born in Pitt County, N.C. some time around 1835. My father's birth name is Whitehurst as well as his father's. However, we believe that my grandfather was sold several times as a slave and may have carried both the Atkinson and Jenkins slave surnames before slaves were freed. I know it's strange that my grandparents were born and co-habited together as slaves, but my father was the youngest of 14 children born in 1888 and had five children when he was well past the age of 50.
