AfriGeneas Adoption Forum
Re: Adoption Forum

Amen! As an adoptive mother, and now a foster mother with the potential of adopting once again, I can personally testify as to the usefulness of this forum.
At one point or another, I venture to guess that many if not most of us have questioned if we were the "real" children of our parents. I say that "toungue-in-cheek" because I rememeber wondering that when I was a pre-teen, and my opinions and sensitivities seemed so different from my parents. There was no way, I thought, that I could have been flesh of their flesh. Well, that was the temporary angst of a youngster.
Imagine the feelings, however, of the young man or young woman who knows that to be the case. Adoptions in the African-American community--whether through formal or informal means--are a way of life, and have been so for a very long time. How many people do you know of in your own family who can say that their lives have been touched in some way via adoption?
I have great feelings about the good that this forum can do and only wish it had been around when I was a brand new adoptive mother or when my now-adult son was first starting to ask questions about his biological family. Just as brand new families find their way, and settle into that comfort that is generated from family, so will this forum do.
