Re: Looking to Adopt
In Response To: Re: Looking to Adopt ()

Having adopted a child, and being in the process of another, I find that the fees can be nominal. By doing the adoption as it appears you are--privately--there are all sorts of inherent costs. If, however, you work with your county's Department of Family Services or county adoption agency, you will not see those large fees.

Another thing to consider is to go the route of fostering while remaining amenable to adoption. More often than not, the foster parents have "first dibs" (so to speak) toward children placed in their care, once they become available for adoption. It is a bit more of a circuitous route, however it can be very rewarding.

As a foster parent, you will have more of an opportunity to get to know the child in your care. You'd have to be agreeable and cooperative with the case plan for the child, certainly. If reunification is the plan, then you'd have to be gung ho about reunification. However, if you specify that you would prefer the placement of a child or children who are further along in the process toward TPR (termination of the parental rights), with an eye toward adoption, only children in that circumstance will be placed with you.

Whatever method you select is of less importance than the fact that your heart has been opened to adoption. That's the most important thing. Godspeed on your journey!
