I am a reformed "dirt-eater." Most of us periodically ate red clay from the eroded ditch across the road from our school. I can see it now, a deeply eroded section of the road's drainage ditch, deep enough that we kids could stand in it with just our heads and shoulders showing. But thinking back, maybe it was only girls who did this. Now I am going to have to ask an old schoolmate about this. We didn't eat just any old dirt. This was 'clean' dirt. Well, clay IS clean in comparison with other soils. :-)
Our whole community moved when I was 11 years old, (a large plant constructed on the former site) and there was no 'good' clay nearby. But any time it started to sprinkle rain and the smells of damp earth rose up, my mouth started to water.... for a long time after we moved.
