Re: Willing to do Lookups
In Response To: Re: Willing to do Lookups ()
I have seen many instances where the census records have not been consistent in recording the place of birth for my ancestors. For example the 1880 census for my 2ggrandfather lists his place of birth as "NA" and the 1900 shows it as Alabama and his parents as being born in Kentucky. Based on other data given in the 1880 census, I believe he was not home when the census taker came by and someone else gave the information on his behalf. This was not common that someone else (possibly a non family member) could have given information to the census taker, especially if your relatives (like mine) lived in an area which wasn't easily accessible. Mine lived in an area known as Snake Creek. If I were the census taker, based on the name alone, I wouldn't go there!
I also found a relative in the Freedman's bank records. It was such a find. Through her records, I was able to get the names of eight of her 16 siblings, all born between 1843 and 1867.
I think you are on the right track with getting that death record.
Oh yeah, the other two Ben Hawkins listed registered with the Freedman's banks in Tallahassee, Florida and Lexington, Kentucky respectively.
Hope this one belongs to you. Good luck in your search.
