Re: WHY DO I SEARCH?
I ask myself this question over and over; and then I talk to my elders ( I am in my mid-30's) and they are glad someone will know the family history when they are gone. I think doing research has allowed me to enter a space with my elders where we feel comfortable with each other as family. I have been around family "story tellin' all my life and I want to make sure they know that someone was ( and is ) listening. I will get to listen again when I go back home for two family reunions this late July and early August.
Doing this makes me feel closer to them becasue I live approxitmately 2500 miles from my family. It is the way I let them know that I love them and if it was not but for them, I would not be here. It is important to do research so that those cousins, if they wish to know, they (we) are not alone in this world. I grew up with close knit family and time--thrown in with a couple other things--has pulled us apart. That is what it feels like to me. I long for that time in my life when my family got together at the drop of a hat. I hope doing research expresses to my family that we still are family despite differences.
Finally, I simply love history and this is the most important history I have studied.
