Taken from the Pittsburgh Gazette Abstracts 1797-1803: THIRTY Dollars Reward. Runaway from the subscriber living in Fayette county, German township, a Negro man named ESSEX, a lusty fellow, 6 feet high, very large feet and hands, much marked with the small pox, thick lips, bold and ill looking; had on and took with a blue sailor's jacket; lined with old cloth of a dark grey colour, 2 waistcoats, one a light grey cassimer, the other a red and yellow calicoe, 2 pairs of overalls,... . He went away on the 24th of December last, and I am informed has changed his name to HARRY, and says he is a blacksmith, but he does not know much of that business. I have reason to believe he has gone towards Presque' isle or Niagara. The above reward will be paid to any person for apprehending and securing said slave so that his master may get him again, with reasonable charges if bro't home. /s/John Huston, Feb 23.
