Re: Death Certificate Information
In Response To: Death Certificate Information ()
You are so right. The information that informants provide on death certificates can be unintentionally misleading, but, it can also be very beneficial.
I had two very positive experiences with death certificates within the last few years.
With one, I was trying to gather info on my grandmother's half-brother. I never knew him, but was (and still am) trying to piece together his life for the family tree. Once I received his death certificate, I was able to determine that he was a widower, at the time of his death. Though I still have not uncovered the name of his wife, at least I now know to pursue the matter.
In the case of my paternal great-grandmother, my great-grandfather was the informant. Thanks to the information provided on the certificate, I was not only able to determine the full name of my gggrandfather, but found out the maiden name of my gggrandmother, as well.
In both instances, the certificate indicated the name of the company that would handle the funeral arrangements. When those mortuary services are still in existence, they are an excellent resource for uncovering more family information.
