Thanks a million Candace... According to our family oral history they were free. I know that they were indentured servants at some point. For sure I know that my great grandmother was a servant at the age of 14 in the home of a liquor dealer in Richmond. But, before that, I'm not sure if they were in another area of VA or in Maryland. From the 1870 census I know that they were all born in VA. In researching my MannS relatives in Maryland, I got stuck on 1870 and finally I scrolled through every image in their ED and in the surrounding areas. One night I found a MANN family.On that page I found my great,great,great grandparents. I deeply appreciate all that you are doing for Afrigeneas. You have made a tremendous contribution to all of us. Thanks again,
