James was not only a prominent attorney and member Nashville's elite African-American circle, but he was a prominent politician, bank officer, community servant, and a presidential appointee. Napier served as the registrar of the U.S Treasury. Yes, his name is one of a small numbers of blacks to appear signed on U.S currency.

Nettie of course was the daughter of Congressman/attorney/race leader/educator John Mercer Langston. She was a close friend of Booker T. Washington's wife.
