Do you have any reasons to believe that he was an orphan? I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet unless there is family oral history that he was an orphan.

If you know the year James Young died, contact the dept. in N.Y. that have the death certificates. It will give the parents' names. Once the parents' names are determined, then look at the So. or No. Carolina census records to find his family.
