Hello [quinns12] Hello VKN, this is my first time How are you! [quinns12] I'm great! Do you know whether your group will meet at the AAHGS conference later this month? Glad to see you here! I am not sure Damita and Angela set that up last year. HAve not talked with them about it. Guess I'd better get busy, huh? [quinns12] That's good. I would like to introduce myself. I'm currently concentrating on VA in my research and I'm looking for others having the same challenge. Are you going to the conference? [quinns12] Yes. Okay now help me to know who you are I do not recognize your screen name [quinns12] I'm the VP of the Prince George's Co. MD Chapter of AAHGS - Bill Shelton Ohhh I see. That is great I know that Louis Diggs is to speak. Congratulations on being in such a dynamic role. [quinns12] Even tho I look the challenge of genealogical research, and have done it for quite a few years, I still am a student of this challenge hobby. Do you have a full membership? One will never learn it all. You are so right regarding the challenge It never gets boring. What are your search names? [quinns12] We normally have about twenty (or so) attending our month meetings. Not a bad number. [quinns12] My search names are: Shelton (Buckingham Co., VA), Wms and Tinsley(Henrico Co, VA). Although you probably have a significant Blavk population in yout County? Are you having success in your searching? [quinns12] How about yours ( I have heard of you for years but never had the pleasure of meeting you). Yes we do have a significant Black population. I have had reasonable success (Shelton back to 1795; Wms back to mid-1800's). I do Franklin County VA and Roanoke County VA for Nelson, Keeling, Callaway, Webb, Wade and Booker Those are the lines for hubby. [quinns12] I have soooo much to ask you, I'm numb! My own line is Bell, Benham, Hendrix all in NC. GA, AL My children'd lines include King, Slater, Blackshear and Barnes Ask away Will try and dust off the brain [laughing] [quinns12] One of the challenges I'm facing is learning more about the areas I'm researching. Currently, [quinns12] researching names of books, collecting maps and momentoes. It's really so much fun! [AltaCann] Greetings all! Hello Alta!!! [quinns12] Can you recommend books concerning the life of blacks in the Roanoke area? And, Hi AltaCann quinns is another VA searcher He also lives in MD. I have some materials and will send you an email [quinns12] Thanks!!! [AltaCann] Yes, infact, I can. I have an excellent book that is a pictoral history with some brief narratives on African-Americans in Roanoke by Dr. Reginald Sharif Alta may know more regarding Roanoke because that is home for her. Coleman hello and Welcome!!!! Come on in Coleman and make yourself comfortable. [AltaCann] BRB .... gong into the library to seek this book for correct title. Please list some of the family names in which you have interest. Coleman what names are you searching? [quinns12] Folks, I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask this question but, our AAHGS' Chapter is always looking for good speakers. Any ideas? Oops guess I did not type fast enough for Coleman Habe you used Dee Woodtor? Hello Art [quinns12] Hi Art [Art] Hello everyone, just let me listen and catch up, okay Speaking of speakers Art is right here and he has some interesting things to share about the UGRR Anita hello and how are you? Come on in and draw up a chair [Anita] Hell everyone. Doing great! How are you? [Art] Rainy day in Ohio Art quinns is lookibg for speajers and I just referred him to you! [quinns12] Art, pleaaasssseee contact me at "quinns12@erols.com" [Anita] I am still wandering through the file/ [Art] Hi quinns, I'm at althomas1@prodigy.net, drop us a line. [quinns12] Certainly will. Thanks. [Anita] I am writing an article for the family newsletter, maybe that will help *]* Anita when are you coming to Anniston? [Anita] I have to plan that trip yet. [Art] Is this THE Anita? [AltaCann] Hello Art ! Well no time like the present No promises for the future [Art] howdy pardner Alta [Anita] Then you and I will have to do a land line and arrange it. Oops you means somebody else out there knows how terrific is our Anita] [Anita] Art, what do you mean THE Anita? [Anita] I am not sure I am that one..lol [Art] All y'all on Afrigeneas are terrific!!! [AltaCann] I am back, Quinns12 ......The book is The Roanoke Valley's African American Hertitage A Pictoral History By Reginald Shareef, Ph.D [quinns12] Got it AltaCann. Thanks. Alta I think I have some xeroxed pages of that book. [Art] Alta, does this book reference the Randolph slaves of roanoke plantation? Art erase all y'all and add all us LOL [AltaCann] Yo may order this book from the Harriosn Museum of African American Culture 523 Harrison Ave. NW Roanoke, VA 24016 [AltaCann] Harrison [Art] Okay, I will Alta it was sent to me by the same person who sent the Cannaday information. [AltaCann] Art it does not reference Randopph slave or the Plantation..Roanoke was originally called Big Lick and Art I doubt it is the same place [Art] Okay Alta [AltaCann] Yes, my someof my Cannadays are in the book. Many of many various surnames are in there Anuta has your workload slowed to a halt as yet? [AltaCann] Quinns, I am in Bowir, MD where are you .. if close you may view my book [Anita] Not yet, I don't think it ever will. But I am still having fun so it's ok....LOL [AltaCann] Bowie Anita I signed on with hostway for my kingbarnes webpage [AltaCann] There wer few plantations in that part of the state, mostly large farms Art. [quinns12] AltaCann, I'm in Seabrook - right down the road. [Anita] That is also next on my agenda for willisbeason [AltaCann] Goodness we are neighbors! So I will need a few instructions on getting it in place and then I will begin to upload the photo gallery that I have [AltaCann] What are your names in the Roanoke are Quinns? [Anita] This latest discovery has the family yelling for the website so I have to get it up and running. [Anita] I plan to have all in place by Thanksgiving so that we can all give extra thanks. Anita I plan to have a page for each of the seven king brothers then a page for dad and his kin and Mom and her kin [quinns12] Not currently researching Roanoke, but will eventually get to the Harrisons (my nephew married a Harrison). [Anita] VKN...that is what I am doing. [Anita] The front page is a linked photo page and from there each branch is accessible. [AltaCann] We might be kin Quinns! Would have them all link from page one [Art] Anita & VKN, do you have "tips" on HP's for us beginners? Alta is the cousin for us all. [quinns12] I n t e r e s t i n g ! [AltaCann] I see Quinn .... [Anita] That is the best way to go. [Anita] Art...do you mean HP as in Hewlett Packard? Well Art I saw you posted the link to your new page [Art] Home Page, I'm sorry have not been there as yet but plan to go. [Anita] Art...sometimes I get caught up in hardware and forget that there are other lhings out there...LOL [Art] VKN, FTM does that as an advertising feature when you do a significant update. [Anita] I don't really have any real tips but the best thing is to keepit simiple. [AltaCann] LOL at VKN .. not quite evryone's cousin but close [Art] Believe me, mine is simple :-)) [Anita] Don't try to get everything on one page. :Use links to get to details Well Alta when I get those Webbs and Wades to you you will be able to see the connections [Anita] If you can use FrontPage it takes you through a tutorial on building a whole site that you can upload [Anita] if your ISP will allow that other wise it still can give you clues on how to build and link [Anita] subsequent pages. [Art] MyFamily.com has an interesting concept for family web pages [Anita] Uh oh.....see what Art started. [very big grin] Alta what is a good time to call you today? [Art] Am i in trouble? [AltaCann] I am excited. My grandmother was a WEBB on the CANNADAY side. I have WADE on my mother's MARTIN side. [quinns12] Showing my ignorance again folks, but when you do your homepages, are you purchasing "secure" space or using one of the "free" services. The reason for the question is I'm paranoid about putting information on one of the free servers [Anita] Art, another interesting thing about the online sites that have free pages is that they are good for [Anita] getting stated and before long you find that you have outgrown them and want to try more. [Art] I know, Quinn MyFamily is Usernamed and passworded quinn I agree with you. I have a good package with hosteay, net. Tell the, I sent you! [Anita] Quinn, you can also use space that is provided by you own ISP. quinn that is HostWay.net [quinns12] Folks, this is good info. I appreciate your patience. Anita did you sign up with them as yet? [Art] I was a programmer/analyst for 30 years and don't want to learn HTML, is it neede? [Art] needed [Anita] You need to be careful what you put online as a matter of cours. [Anita] Art no you don't have to know html. Most of the programs today [Anita] will do all of the coding for you. [Anita] I know that the ones at myfamily.com are just what I call "type and go" [Art] Good, this "dog" don't hunt anymore LOL [Anita] LOL Art you need to have a basic understanding but I would say to actually learn html is not needed. [AltaCann] I am here all day. This chicken is feeling plucked today and will not venture out. [Anita] Art, I love that phrase. I heard Walter Mathau say it in the movie JFK and it has stuck in my brain since. [Art] Anita, it "fits" more often than not. [Anita] Art..it is funny to hear someone else use it. I never thought about using it in reference to myself. but I never [Anita] call anybody a liar all I say is "that dog don't hunt" and they never knoo what I mean. [Anita] I get more laughs out of it. [Anita] knoo=know [AltaCann] Quinn, please share your fears about security issues on nonsecure servers, I had not really given it much thought. What should I be concerned about? [Art] On Home Pages, How do you get 'lazy" folks to experiment and not complain about how cumbersome it is? [Art] Navigation, that is [AltaCann] I heard Bill Clinton use that dog don't hunt term very early in his administration .... wonder what he meant? [Anita] Art, there is no way. People will complain no matter what you do. [Art] Too old to--_____, fill in the blank [Art] Anita, you're right, and I really enjoy sharing with family, BUT...... [Anita] I say if you are not too old to logon, then you are not too old to fill in the blanks. Hello Carolyn, Welcome!!!! [Art] Right on, Anita!! [Art] 'lo Carolyn [Carolyn] Hello everybody [Anita] Art...I have just decided to trudge ahead and the more I find the more the family comes on board. CArolyn there is a great group of people in here nibbling at the genealogy table. [Carolyn] Just having a little lunch Jump in and join us. [Anita] They still don't get most of it but hey, they drop clues that I can turn into a find and that helps me. [Carolyn] I thought I'd join in [Anita] I just found my gg-grandfather's pension records and now the family is in an uproar to hear all. [Art] Do you research the whole family and not just your dircect lines? [Art] direct [Carolyn] I've gotten our family back to the early 1800's here in the same county [Anita] Art, I get distracted and end up researcing everybody. [Carolyn] just one side [Art] Sometimes those collateral lines are just full of information [AltaCann] My family thinks that I am obsessed with this and most really do not understand why I search. I think it great therapy actually. [Anita] I am trying to stick to the direct line but I am finding sometimes that when I deviate a little I find [Anita] a missing link to the directs. Carolyn where are you located? and carolyn what are your search names in what states? [Anita] I do try to focus on only one branch at a time but that doesn't always work either, as just in the past two [Carolyn] Tn [Anita] weeks I had to breaks in a row and they both seem to be major so I have to split my time between the two. [AltaCann] What are your surnames, Carolyn? [Carolyn] 1. Drew. [Thu Oct 05 12:03:09 CDT 2000] Disconnected. Close VolanoChat and restart. [AltaCann] I heard Bill Clinton use that dog don't hunt term very early in his administration .... wonder what he meant? ==== [Anita] Guess we all went for a bumpy buggy ride....LOL Ouch! [Art2] Carolyn, east or west TN? That was a big bump [Carolyn] Somebody stepped on my "Cricket" again. [Art2] For shame, for shame Carolyn [Carolyn] Did you get the last names before we got off? Heyyy all please type your edress to the screen. I would like to do some followup VKN@AfriGeneas.Com [Art2] althomas1@prodigy.net [AltaCann] AncestorSeek@aol.com [Anita] willisa@mindspring.com [quinns12] quinns12@erols.com [Carolyn] CTown805659@aol.com Wunnerful. wunnerful!!! [Carolyn] Drew, Gooch, Collins, Jakoway, Johns, Williams is my line Carolyb I only saw Drew [Art2] VKN, that Fairfax County "stuff" you asked for. The book is like 300 pages were there others, Carolyn? [AltaCann] Jakoway is unusual [Carolyn] We're in Middle Tn. Rutherford Co. [Carolyn] I've heard the Jakoway is from Il. Carolyn did you see all of the GOOCH wills posted to the slave afrigeneas list" [AltaCann] One I had not heard of until now, that should make for an intersting search. Williams is always a tough one. [Carolyn] It's a rare name I know. [Art2] Is Gooch, like in Goochland county VA? [AltaCann] Hey, Jeter!!!!!!!!!!!! CArolyn I know a few with Gooch from Granville county NC [jeter] Hey, evabody! [Anita] Hi jeter Jeter!!!!!!!! how are you? [Art2] Whaaa Up, Bro jeter? [Carolyn] Goochland?, Yes, but everytime I key that in all I get is Va. Jeter how did it go last night? [Carolyn] I'm looking for goochland, Tn. [jeter] It went well last night, I just wished I could copy the dialogue.. Jeter I was booted off and never could get back on [Carolyn] It was sold in the late 1800's to the Government & they built Sewart Air Force Base. That's as much as I can get. Jeter you have to xelect then cut and paste select [jeter] Oh, dat keyboard striketh..LOL LOL [jeter] Cut n' paste..ok [AltaCann] Have you had any luck with the land records regarding the sale of the land to the governament? [AltaCann] that was to Carolyn [Carolyn] Not yet. I keep getting sidetracked when I go to the Archive. [Carolyn] I have a cousin in Tx. that's checking that out. [AltaCann] I see ... [Art2] Alta, not Land records from the GOV, but Bounty Land in KY, VA and OH [Carolyn] He was found on the Internet. [AltaCann] Thanks, Art. Please explain bounty land. [Carolyn] We got a chance to meet back in July & he looks just like my baby brother. [Carolyn] We had a great time, short but sweet. [Art2] Land given to REV War vets to settle on and claim in the "new" west [AltaCann] ahhhhh... I see, Art. [Art2] See lots of Sales by ex-presidents and rev war vets in this area [Carolyn] As a child it seemed like my grandfather owned all the neighborhood. [AltaCann] This is why I love this forum so much. I learn new information jsut by being present. [Carolyn] Not to mention our other cousins. [Art2] I'm learning a lot of geography with these State and county changes [AltaCann] Art, please provide one interesting example. [Art2] VA--becoming\ KY, TN and NC [Carolyn] I tried getting on earlier & mis-spelled some words, went to the Homepage & they have a list of previous chats. Oct. 2,3,etc. I hope I can print them later. [Art2] Jefferson County VA becoming JEFF Co, KY, then split to Shelby KY, then split to Oldham CO. [AltaCann] OK... I knew about KY .. was originally Augusta County, VA and also new about WV. I did not know about TN and north Carolina [Carolyn] My family thinks I'm nuts for wanting to know our history, but what they don't know is that this helps explain a lot of things to me. [Art2] You're so right, carolyn [AltaCann] I recently read somewhere that eight states were formed from VA. I cannot identify them [AltaCann] them all [AltaCann] They were listed in the article, but I do not rememeber what they were. [Art2] Remember VA went to the MS river [Carolyn] In the late 1700's is when NC split & Tn was [Art2] Ohio and the NW territory was once claimed by VA [AltaCann] TN, NC, KY, WV .....then it would also mean that Ohio came from VA, too? [Carolyn] It's interesting, because there was a section on a map that had Indian Territory. [AltaCann] I alsothink Michigan was there too [AltaCann] on the listing [Art2] Ohio, Indiana, Michigan [Carolyn] Which helped me explain my high cheekbones. [Carolyn] Are all of you Family Historians? [AltaCann] Art, I learn so much form you. Kudos, to the sage! [Carolyn] I'm just curious. [jeter] What are the timeframes for the VA boundary changes? [AltaCann] I try to be, Carolyn! [Art2] Alta, are you saying I'm a know-it-all? LOl [Anita] Carolyn, I nominated myself the family historian [jeter] I'm a wannabe.. [AltaCann] I am saying you can tell Art, but you can't tell him much! [Carolyn] Me to Jeter [Carolyn] I enjoy it too much. [Art2] Ky became a State in 1792, Ohio 1803, Indiana aboyt 1813, not sure about MI [Anita] Alta...that is so funny, I will have to remember that. [Art2] Alta, you got me!!
