Ingrid_Doweary: I love the idea, AY.
keli1: Yes Maggie Walker house
AYWalton: (since some folks say all roads lead to VA!)

Selma: and who might that be AY?
AYWalton: oh somebody I know down in Newport News!
keli1: Virginia is the Mother state...and all roads do lead here, lol, that is why I moved here
Ingrid_Doweary: Ahhh, AY.
AYWalton: where did you move from, keli1?
keli1: I lived in Tallahassee Florida for 16yrs

AYWalton: we were talking about Ypsi, and Inkster, and Fruitport, and Jhonora was cracking up with the names. this was at Ft. Wayne sitting around the bar.
keli1: oh yea, we used to go to Musgekon for the clubs
Ingrid_Doweary: Hmmmm.
AYWalton: really? That must have been why my Basses landed there.

seventies soulchild: did I read someone mention all roads lead to VA? :}
AYWalton: ahhh ok.
Selma: What industry was in Muskegon?
keli1: I went from ar, ms, ca, hi
Ingrid_Doweary: 3rd, which your specific point of interest of the US Naval Base in DC?
AYWalton: wow you have lived all over. Selma, not sure.
keli1: they had some factories-wood or furniture I think
AYWalton: I think one of those support buisnesss for the auto industry---they made some kind of parts.
Selma: OK..wondering what made folks move there..
keli1: lots of smaller feeder plants to GM and Ford
3rdthawkins: Ingrid_Doweary I wanted to know his military interest, I have a record that says U.S. Naval and it has a something like Leu and Station and has washington. I want to know what naval base my grandfather was and if that is where he was living when he entered service
AYWalton: There is the US Navy Shipyard in Washington, 3rd.
seventies soulchild: ok good people. I know that its supposed to be a day off,but I have a lot of things to do...

Ingrid_Doweary: 3rd, have you read the national archives's website on us navy records?
daviss: all the runners lol
3rdthawkins: yes, I think Ingrid, I know I won't be able to order them because I am not next of kin
Ingrid_Doweary: Yep they are quick on the draw.
daviss: how would they know that 3rd?
Ingrid_Doweary: What type of record were you referring from?
3rdthawkins: I would have to do something if I am daviss, something I don't have baptismal Ingrid
daviss: hmmm
Ingrid_Doweary: Okay, which location was the baptismal based from?
3rdthawkins: this was in Charleston SC
Ingrid_Doweary: Were any SC naval bases cited in this document?
3rdthawkins: no
Ingrid_Doweary: I meant also to ask if you were able to locate the person's name on one or more census records?
3rdthawkins: 1930 he was born 1924 this is my grandfather
daviss: hey it was over 50 yrs so why cant you order
3rdthawkins: you have to be next of kin for all military records, no matter how long daviss as I read
Ingrid_Doweary: Daviss, isnt the grandchild also considered next of kin?
3rdthawkins: I would have just said I was a brother, but I will have to go through too much to do it
daviss: you would think so
3rdthawkins: No, apparently not Ingrid next of kin is spouse of deceased who NEVER MARRIED, children, parents, and siblings
daviss: I am the next of kin to mine all others are deceased running down the line
3rdthawkins: I should say spouse of veteran
Ingrid_Doweary: Seems strange because grandchildren are also considered heirs. I'll have to review that. However, you may want to contact a naval historian. I'll see what I can find out.
daviss: how do all these other people get these records when the deceased is over 50 and they are no kin at all
3rdthawkins: not sure
daviss: exactly! rather the deceased person was born all those years ago thats 80 plus yrs
Ingrid_Doweary: My husband has a cousin who is a retired military veteran and I'll consult him. He was instrumental in retrieving my father-in-laws records for WW2.
daviss: and you arent in line lol I would love to hear what he says also ingrid I would not mind having my fathers records
Ingrid_Doweary: This gives me an opportunity to visit and research the navy yard in DC.
daviss: sounds good
3rdthawkins: yeah, I would like to hear how he did it
daviss: I had one uncle that was in the navy.. all others army-airforce
Ingrid_Doweary: Fair enough, I'll contact him. My brother-in-law was in the Navy from about 1968-1972 i believe. He shared his yearbook with his mother and siblings. Oh, do you have any information as to how long your grandfather was in the Navy? That was for you 3rd.
daviss: {sniff}
Ingrid_Doweary: Wassup, Daviss?
daviss: lol just a tear rolling down my cheek
3rdthawkins: well, according to what was found on Ancestry.com, service start date Sep 1 1950 and I gues end date was Jan 28 1952
Ingrid_Doweary: Why do you hear heart string, Daviss? strings?
daviss: wishing I had been into all this early in life, mabe just mabe I would be a little ahead if not only in oral history
Ingrid_Doweary: into which-WW2 and Korean Conflict history?
3rdthawkins: Korean oh, oops
Ingrid_Doweary: My father was in the army and I try to interview piece meal to get as much information as I can. I did scan a photo of him in uniform at his desk. I 'm still learning how to write transcripts for verbal interviews.
daviss: I bet you are doing a wonderful job ingrid_doweary when was he in the army
Ingrid_Doweary: Well we'll see in a few months. Yes he was in the Army
daviss: meaning what year
Ingrid_Doweary: 1953-1955. Entered college in Fall of 1955 on the G.I. Bill. 3rd, did your grandfather attend school?
3rdthawkins: yes, in Charleston his cousin told me he went to Catholic U which is in D.C. I contacted them, waiting for a reply, he only went for 3 yers, according to his DC=death certificate
Ingrid_Doweary: Did he graduate? Wonder if you could request copies of his transcript. Did his cousin also attend Catholic U? I live in the neighborhood next to the neighbor where Catholic U is located.
3rdthawkins: that's what I want to know........hopefully I can request no, his family was in Charleston SC he moved to D.C. along with my gm
daviss: dang Ingrid I wish you would move to texas lol
3rdthawkins: lol is that near Division Ave. Ingrid, or Deanwood?
daviss: I'am trying 3rd lol lol
3rdthawkins: I forget the neighborhood Division Ave is in I have an address for them in 1954 living on Div. Av
Ingrid_Doweary: Please bare with me for probing because many times every bit of info turns into a lead. What did his cousin say about your grandfather attending Catholic U.? Catholic U. is located in the Brookland neighborhood in N.E. Washington, DC.
3rdthawkins: nothing much Ingrid, just that he went to Catholic U in D.C,
daviss: c yall later! good luck
3rdthawkins: that's where they lived, NE
daviss: bye
3rdthawkins: oik bye daviss
Ingrid_Doweary: Cya Daviss. So do you have any city directories for him residing in DC?
3rdthawkins: ok division ave is in deanwood no Ingrid, someone at ancestry did a look up in the library and found them living on Division Ave 1954 he was working at Bureau of Standards as an engineer, it is now known as National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD
Ingrid_Doweary: Yea, the Deanwood community is farther north of the Brookland community. If you are willing to share his name with me, I'll search directly for more city directories (1953-1959). The Bureau of Standards info is worth looking into.
3rdthawkins: Thomas A. Hawkins, wife's name Ruth M Hawkins
Ingrid_Doweary: The Washington, DC Library HQ has a Local History section which houses DC City Directories from 1870- 1960s. Thanks I'll report back to you after Friday. Is that okay?
3rdthawkins: yes, that's cool, thx
Ingrid_Doweary: YW. It's been a pleasure. I'll sign off now. Until next time. Cya.
3rdthawkins: ok, bye, cya
