daviss: howdy Spivey!

Spivey: Hi daviss! How are you?

daviss: I am fine Spivey, how about you?

Spivey: I have a royal headache trying to work out the machinations of my ancestors daviss. That's how I am. ROTFL.

daviss: well at least its Royal lol better than a d**am headache

Spivey: Would you have access to any Georgia marriage records daviss?

daviss: The one thing I enjoy is that this keeps the brain working

Spivey: Hi jhonora!

jhonora: Evening daviss, Spivey! Evening ryan

daviss: no Spivey I dont. I would like to get my Burkes lic

Spivey: Hi ryan!

ryan: Davis, Spivey, jhonora..

daviss: hi the jhonora and ryan!

Spivey: Burkes license? What's that daviss?

daviss: should be hi there Burks marriage lic

Spivey: I want to get access to the Burke County Marriage Book.

daviss: Is it on line somewhere?

ryan: Whats in it Spivey

Spivey: You know that some SPIVEY slaveowners supposedly sold some of their slaves to a Burke Plantation in Georgia daviss?

daviss: yes, I believe you told me that Spivey. I am looking though at a Means as a holder

Spivey: Burke County, Georgia marriages ryan. It has a wealth of information if you're researching that county.

AYWalton: Good evening all. Howy daviss!!!

ryan: No, not me Spivey..

jhonora: Evening AYWalton

daviss: Hello there AYWalton!

AYWalton: Hey hey hey, it's honoray!

ryan: Hi AY..

AYWalton: howdy jhonora,

Spivey: I don't think Ancestry has them all online yet ryan. Hard to tell.

AYWalton: hello ryan, hello Spivey. I hope everyone is doing well.

Spivey: Hi AYWalton!

daviss: doing great AYWalton and how about you?

Spivey: Fine here AYWalton except for an ancestor headache. How about yourself?

AYWalton: doing well!

daviss: How is the Conference

AYWalton: lol, I fully understand, Spivey! tired! I had a good time at the conference today.

daviss: I imagine AYWalton

AYWalton: plus my presentation went well

ryan: cool..

daviss: very good!

Spivey: ryan, do you do any research in Burke County Georgia?

jhonora: Great AY! I know it was well-received.

AYWalton: I think it (and hope) it was, jhonora.

ryan: Well AY, you're such a veteran of the trade, why would'nt your presntation go well?

daviss: Spivey, do you have the link for that or do you need access

AYWalton: I have a few images from the conference: http://myancestorsname.blogspot.com/ thanks, ryan.

ryan: No Spivey no Burke County Georgia

daviss: very nice pics AYWalton

ryan: AY, I liked the way you put a scree name with a face

AYWalton: it was fun.

Spivey: Ancestry has a database of Georgia marriages daviss.

AYWalton: the banquet should be ending right about now. they will then have a social/dance afterwards. some of the regulars were missing, though.

ryan: Spivey, I thought you knew that Shelby County, TN is the center of the universe for me ?

Spivey: LOL. Sorry, ryan, I didn't know that. Doesn't Shelby County have some good resources online ryan?

AYWalton: is is now, ryan?

ryan: yes, aweseome records... everything but probate.. but hey.. I'm fortunate to have shelby county roots...

daviss: I was under the impression that you were looking for Burke County Marriages.. I forgot you had renewed your Ancestry Spivey

AYWalton: Speaking of Shelby County, I saw that Zion cemetery has a database online. My Amanda, I have found where she is buried. the actual plot. do you live there, ryan?

ryan: Ok, AY Zion? Don't know of that one Zion..

Spivey: daviss, Ancestry does not have the specifics for marriages in Burke County, just the Georgia Marriages database. The Burke County marriage book is strictly for those married in Burke County.

ryan: AY, my father was born in Memphis, his parents went to memphis around 1920 from mississippi I live in chicago (I'm the bartlett, il visitor to your blogspot)

AYWalton: it was one of the oldest cemeteries for Afr. Americans, in Memphis. Let me try to find the database for you, ryan. it shows the actual ledger.

ryan: cool, I will check out..my grandad is in hollywood cemetary.. need records from there. many, many ancestors in mount carmel cemetary

AYWalton: ryan, try this site: http://www.zioncemeteryproject.org/search.php

ryan: ok -thanks

AYWalton: now I will know who is logging in from Illinois.

ryan: also, for you... check out this site : http://register.shelby.tn.us/ has death certs over 50yo. and many property, death, marraige records..

daviss: that link sounds like a winner ryan

AYWalton: ok thanks for that link.

ryan: it is a winner for anyone with roots there. also, the death index is on beta.familysearch.org but you can view the actual records here. also the index on familysearch allows you to search by father, or mothers maiden name etc

AYWalton: Ok that reminds me---all of the FamilySearch databases are about to merge. I believe they are merging this coming week.

ryan: yes.. I'm on it

AYWalton: that will include the Beta, Pilot, Wiki, and everything. I heard that today.

ryan: I like the pilot more, but hey.. its a winner

daviss: I know AYWalton, most of the ones I tried to find today were not on the old search

AYWalton: ahhhh ok they are already moving them.

Spivey: I'm glad to hear that AYWalton. The Beta version didn't allow to narrow search by place, name, etc.

AYWalton: Someone was there from FamilySearch. the merge has begun.

ryan: cool

daviss: anyone ask if it were still gonna be free lol lol

ryan: thats good... Spivey, I noticed that too, the search was not as good "predicting" locations you are looking for

daviss: wb jhonora

Spivey: Did anyone ask why we have to register as a member or non-member of the Latter Day Saints? Welcome back jhonora.

AYWalton: did you get bumped jhonora?

Spivey: Let's hope they keep that function ryan.

daviss: AYWalton must be mt'ing

AYWalton: I think if you are a member you will then have access to features that non-church members have. For example they have religious feature where one "seals" an ancestor to the church. part of their religious beliefs. I did not say that correctly---I meant to say that you will have access to features that non-members do NOT have.

daviss: awwww look at AYWalton and Selma! :} now thats a nice picture AY Is the Conference over

AYWalton: it ends officially tomorrow morning after breakfast.

Spivey: I'm lost AYWalton. I didn't register as a member of the LDS because I'm not. What features other than the religious belief ones are non-LDS not going to have access to?

AYWalton: However, the speeches and presentations are over. Since I am not a member, I cannot say, because I do not know. I was only saying "I think" but not being LDS I cannot speak from knowledge.

ryan: I've either been too busy (not around much of late, a project a work has been killin me), or I did'nt see or get invited to the party...

Spivey: Okay. Thanks AYWalton.

AYWalton: yw, Spivey. get some rest, ryan, don't overdo it.

ryan: thx

AYWalton: Howdy Ingrid!!!!

Spivey: Hi Ingrid_Doweary!

daviss: hello Ingrid!

Ingrid_Doweary: Hey Ryan, Daviss, AYWalton, Spivey and Jhonora.

Ingrid_Doweary: No I didn't just sat down for quite time. Thanks AY, was happy to participate. Hey Vkn!

ryan: Hi Vkn

AYWalton: I am not sure, jhonora.

Ingrid_Doweary: wb Ryan and Jhonora.

AYWalton: the sessions were all over the place, on different floors.

vkn: Spivey, Ryan, Jhonora, daviss, Amos

Ingrid_Doweary: AY, you didn't waste any time posting AfriGeneas participation at AAHGS.

AYWalton: lol

AmosNY: Hi VKN! I didn't see you there.

AYWalton: yes, i wanted to get them up!

vkn: lol @ Amos

AYWalton: wassup AmosNY?

vkn: So Ingrid and AYW how many people were present

Ingrid_Doweary: Good for you, AY. I'm still trying to transfer the photos I took.

AYWalton: It was lots of fun!!!

Ingrid_Doweary: Are you referring to conference attendees, Vkn?

daviss: Could I get a button lol I was there in spirit!

vkn: Yes Ingrid sort of a ruff number

AYWalton: why sure, daviss!

daviss: I thank ya!

Ingrid_Doweary: I have to consult Charles Howard because I didn't even think to ask.

AYWalton: they are nice daviss! consult him on what?

AmosNY: Angela, I'm ok. I cancelled my trips to N.C. and FL this month.

vkn: number of regs

daviss: Did you all get to make any merchandise sales

AYWalton: you did?

ryan: ok AY, I just googled the Zion cemetery.. gonna check it out.. thx again..

AmosNY: Yes. I decided to go to Jamaica in Dec. Perhaps for Christmas.

vkn: lol sales what's that daviss?

AYWalton: sure thing. that sounds like a nice option, AmosNY!

daviss: like the shirts and back packs

AmosNY: Yes. A couple of online friends invited me.

AYWalton: that is nice of them to extend the invitation.

daviss: were you at the conference AmosNY?

AYWalton: vkn, the table was popular. folks were suprised that the pens and pencils and buttons were free! Ingrid and I should have charged a dollar for them---we could have made some spare change. LOL

daviss: lol

vkn: Ingrid did you participate in any session? Angela how did your presentation go? Did either of you hear Selma present?

AYWalton: I went to Selma's yesterday! It was very good! I think mine went well, today. howdy khathu!!!! there he is!!!

jhonora: Evening khathu!

Khathu: Hello everyone

AYWalton: Thanks for helping at the table today, khathu!

vkn: Glad you ladies were popular

Ingrid_Doweary: I did attend Angela's Blended Families session. Hey Khathu!

Spivey: Hi Khathu!

AYWalton: better than yesterday---we were not in a good location.

Khathu: No problem. It was my pleasure to represent AfriGeneas

AYWalton: but today we were in a good spot.

Ingrid_Doweary: Yes Khathu was popular at the table also.

vkn: Great Khathu!

AYWalton: khathu, check out my blog, you are there!!

daviss: hello khathu!

Ingrid_Doweary: Same here, Khathu.

AYWalton: myancestorsname.blogspot.com

Khathu: okay.....

AYWalton: I also caught some of ProfessorDru's presentation, for a few---she was into it and folks were enjoying it.

vkn: Grrrrrrrreat

Khathu: Ingrid - I was just being my charming self

vkn: Watch it khathu lol

AYWalton: lol

Ingrid_Doweary: Good for you, Khathu. You did a great job.

AYWalton: yes, he who shows mercy to all (the meaning of his name) was wonderful to have at the table, today.

Ingrid_Doweary: Vkn, I felt like a little spunge, taking all of the events and conversations in.

Khathu: my full name is Khathutshelo (Kat-too-shel-low)

vkn: Hope you spunged enough for me Ingrid

Ingrid_Doweary: I hope so too, Vkn. I learned and observed a great deal of information.

vkn: Origin of name Khathu?

AYWalton: you will have to tell us that story, someday, khathu.

vkn: Yes please plan to Khathu

Khathu: Tshi-Venda - South African

AYWalton: all in all it was a good day, and I am quite tired, but pleased that all went well.

Khathu: i would agree

Ingrid_Doweary: I concur. Even yesterday, we shared the value of AfriGeneas with at least ten people. The past two days went well.

daviss: I will close out now. time to make a sandwich. take care folks

vkn: On Book TV author [name not yet known] talking about her book entitled The Invention of White People oops was just a teaser it is off now Get some rest AYW you have had a busy three days more than usual

AYWalton: I shall do that, thanks. In fact I shall sign off for the evening.

Ingrid_Doweary: Yes take care. AY.

AYWalton: have a great evening everyone.

vkn: U 2 Ingrid_Doweary did you meet many people for the first time and you Khathu?

Khathu: I met Selma for the first time

Ingrid_Doweary: I certainly did, Vkn. I also met Selma, Veronica, Drusilla and Betty.

Khathu: and Veronica

vkn: Betty Craft from Chicago? I not sure I know veronica

Ingrid_Doweary: You know, Vkn I don't remember her last name, but she urged me to tell her about AfriGeneas. Veronica-evpace.

vkn: Drusilla and AYW will be presenting here in Atlanta on 12 November

jhonora: What event, vkn?

vkn: Ohhhhhh evPace ok she is an old timer

Ingrid_Doweary: I also met Kelley from African Ancestry and Faye from Sisterspace.

vkn: called Family History Day Jhonora

jhonora: Put on by the local library?

vkn: I have heard of Kelley who is assistant to Dr. Kittles?

Ingrid_Doweary: She's the Kelley I met.

vkn: No Jhonora it is a national group. It seems they do these conferences across country. I am just learning about them recently Well MUCH appreciation to Ingrid, Khathu and AYW for hoisting the AfriGeneas banner

Khathu: no problem vkn have a great evening everyone

Ingrid_Doweary: My pleasure, Vkn.

vkn: Amos how goes NYC for you and for you too Spivey ?

Spivey: It goes well vkn. Not many natural born Americans left here it seems though.

vkn: I hear that

Ingrid_Doweary: How so, Spivey?

vkn: Ryan did you find Zion

Spivey: I just found out an interesting fact yesterday vkn. The street I live on was the site of a battle during the American Revolution.

Ingrid_Doweary: Which street and which location?

ryan: VKN - Yes, I found Zion

vkn: Now how about that. What caused the discovery Spivey

Spivey: Come and test the accents and dress and behaviour Ingrid_Doweary.

vkn: Great Ryan!

ryan: I was looking at that a while ago, many of the burials there were before my ancestors went to memphis

Ingrid_Doweary: Good for ou Ryan.

Spivey: A friend of mine was bringing me home yesterday and he just happened to mention it vkn.

ryan: But there are many from like after the first 5 years they got there

vkn: Is there no marker there Spivey

ryan: so, theres some possiblities

Spivey: He says there was years ago vkn but it deteriorated so the City took it down.

vkn: I see Ryan of course there are prolly many unmarked graves? Spivey hmmmm sombody better get the preservationists stirred up lol

Spivey: vkn preservation does not work well in this City. There is a courthouse here that has been declared a landmark. They built a building on the REAR of it that is mostly glass. It looks hideous.

ryan: yes vkn.. there are (2) other cemeteries there, one of which my grandfather is in.. but can't get cemetary records

vkn: JHonora Dr Rose sent request to explore two other archives in MD. I will be in touch with Michael Hait on tomorrow

Ingrid_Doweary: Sounds very interesting, Spivey. I found a Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper clipping cited some of the Black Patriots who served in the American Revolutonary War.

jhonora: Great, vkn, hopefully it will yield some results.

vkn: Well you said that Americans are scarce spivey so maybe that explains the neglect

Spivey: You did Ingrid_Doweary? That must have been interesting. I hear very little about Black patriots serving in the Revolutionary War.

Ingrid_Doweary: Spivey could you get snapshots of the location and post them on AfriGenean Talking?

Spivey: Partly, I guess, vkn. It is sad, though, that we are losing our history this way.

vkn: ryan why is that? No sexton or ???

Ingrid_Doweary: Yes, Spivey That's high on my to-list for blogging.

Spivey: Hmm . . . . . I have a digital camera Ingrid_Doweary. I can try to but I'm not much into photography.

ryan: these (2) cematraries in Memphis are also for black folk.. MT Carmel and Hollywood.. both are "defunct" with no records

Ingrid_Doweary: What ever you could capture about the building locations and there surroundings would be helpful for research.

Spivey: I actually bought the camera because I'm determined to photograph that historic graveyard that York College was going to pave over.

vkn: Well markers are dotted all over the South. Preservation is IN

ryan: I would love good records for those 2 cemataries

jhonora: ryan, out of curiousity, where is the Church Family buried?

vkn: That sounds like sheer neglect Ryan

Spivey: Ingrid_Doweary if it's anything like the surroundings of the Church were Paul Revere gave the warning that the British were coming, you wouldn't recognize it. I visited that site and it is surrounded by slums.

ryan: well, in Memphis, they went to one of the oldest black churches there (Mount Moriah, and Mount Pisgah)..

vkn: and Ryan with a museum there and all

ryan: Before that, I know many were burried at churches in Marshall County, MS (I know a few of them)

vkn: JHonora are Louisiana cemeteries well maintained in general/

ryan: but yes, the cemataries I mentioned are neglegted here is where my grandfather is Hollywood, in Memphis http://www.onefast.org/tonyr/jimmie/index_files/Page448.htm

jhonora: The Catholic ones are usually in good shape. Often times Protestant ones are worn. City-owned cemeteries are generally in the worst shape. Those in high-flooding areas may have many graves washed away. As y'all know, we bury above the ground.

vkn: Will check it out tomorrow Ryan

Ingrid_Doweary: Dr. Betteye Collier-Thomas, a Luncheon speaker today spoke about Nannie Helen Burroughs today and it seemed not many folks in the audience had heard of her. I started thinking about of the the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper articles and headlines citing Ms. Burroughs's early 20th century activism.

vkn: Yes Jhonora I saw that in Lake Charles many years ago. people I was visiting lived across the strett from a cem

ryan: well, gotta run yall.. catch ya later though

vkn: okies ryan

Ingrid_Doweary: Cya Ryan

ryan: k

jhonora: Yes, vkn, and All Saints Day is largely spent taking care of graves. Good thing with tombs is that sometimes 30 plus relatives in one spot.

vkn: wow

Ingrid_Doweary: Good for you, Jhonora

vkn: Amos in Anniston it is called Decoration day Interesting Jhonora Well good peeps I will see y'all 2morry

Spivey: Goodnight everyone. Have a nice rest of the evening.

Ingrid_Doweary: Well gentlemen, Good nite.

jhonora: Goodnight Ingrid & Amos!
