Seventies Soulchild: Hi davss Hello HistoryBuff Is anyone here? Can you all see me ? Seventies Soulchild Hellooooo????
Khathu: Hello good people
Seventies Soulchild: Hey Khathu
Khathu: So I guess you got all your work done hello alt
daviss: Hi Khathu and Seventies!
alt: hello y'all daviss, Khathu & 70's
daviss: hello alt! Hello again HistoryBuff!
alt: Hi HistoryBuff
Khathu: I was reviewing the CW Pension File for Lorenzo Williams and noticed that there is info on another individual named Lorenzo Williams from Tennessee in the file as well as some of the correspondces from Lorenzo Williams are missing
alt: have you determined the relationship, if any?
Khathu: not yet alt
daviss: Khathu did you connect him as yours Is the name Lorenza or Lorenzo Kathu I have seen both spellings
alt: pension files are great, but they often create more questions than they answer
Khathu: currently i am just going by oral history which described him as looking "white", information on my gg grandmother and her sister's death certificates naming patterns in the family and his proximity to my gg grandmother and her sister
daviss: How did you determine that correspondence was missing Khathu'
Khathu: I am looking at both spelling daviss Based on the letters from the War Department. They clearly indicate that he challenged their decisions on rejecting his claim
daviss: Do you think there is a pension file for this Tn Williams and that the missing letters would be located there
Khathu: the letters show them replying to additional information he provided
alt: those are the 'good one's' the rejected applications.... lots of stuff there because of the rejections.
Khathu: it is definitely a possibility. i will have to look into that the Williams from TN was definitely in the USCT I was working on putting all of the Pension documents in chronological order
alt: following the paper trail for the pension application chronologically?
daviss: was there a wife mentioned
HistoryBuff: Did you consult the general adjutant records?
Khathu: yes, i am alt
alt: good move Khathu
Khathu: his wife filed a widow's application in 1936. this is the reason why the file was not housed at the archive well at least one of the reasons
alt: wow, that late, huh? she must have been quite a bit younger than her husband.
Khathu: he initially applied in 1915 and then again in 1922. He died around 1928
Seventies Soulchild: Ok what is the cut off date for pension files to be housed at the archives vs being housed at the VA?
alt: even 1928 is late.... 63 years after the CW... Wow!!
Khathu: No she was only 5 years younger than him
alt: is that right
Khathu: he was 71 when he first applied
daviss: Was he in Tx khathu
Khathu: yes, he was in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas
alt: okay, born ca 1844
Khathu: I don't when the cut off date was His application did provide me with some positive clues
alt: I can imagine it did Khathu
daviss: I ate dinner in Palestine lol
Khathu: He was married before and divorced by 1870 and that after the war, he settled in Palestine
alt: where was he originally from Khathu & what USCT unit did he serve with?
Khathu: Kansas Territory. He claimed he served in an all white regiment - Company F, 11th Illinois Cavalry as a buglar I think he may have served "unofficially" a contraband solider
daviss: interesting
alt: ah so, this is one of those fella's you talked with the lady who wrote the book about AA's serving in white units?
Khathu: Mrs. Moss but there is no record of his enrollment or service
alt: yep, I guess those situations are difficult to document "officially"
Khathu: He reported that at the time of his enlistment he worked on a stream boat
Seventies Soulchild: Interesting.
Khathu: very interesting indeed hello kim
alt: hello kim.. how ya doing today?
Seventies Soulchild: He was born in the midwest, righr?
daviss: hello Kim!!
Khathu: Chico or near Emporia, Kansas
