Ingrid_Doweary: Sorry Jhonora, I was having problems typing. Glad to see you were able to resolve the connectivity issue.
jhonora: Any new discoveries on your end?
Ingrid_Doweary: I'm finding more connections to my husband's ancestor participating on the Union side of the American Civil War. Gotta verify the information with the monthly muster sheets-USCT, 6th Regt. Heavy Artillery possibly MS, USA.
jhonora: That is great! Is his burial place known, you may be able to get a marker.
3rdthawkins: hey Ingrid and jhonora
jhonora: Hey 3rdthawkins The Sons of Union Veterans don't have chapters in La or Ms, I don't believe.

Seventies Soulchild: Hey deannie, Selma, 3rd, Ingrid_Doweary, jhonora, vkn
3rdthawkins: well vkn, it is more her's, she is looking for a long lost sister who was (probably) unofficially adopted out of the family. This person posted on Afrigeneas in 2004 and 2006 and I found that post in 2009, but because it was archived, I coud not respond. So I copied and pasted her posts into mine giving my contact info and how we were related. My mother's maternal grandmother is the sister of this poster's grandfather.
vkn: Hope everyone is powered up and powered on
Seventies Soulchild: Congratulations 3rd
Selma: I am about to "power down" and go to bed vkn.. LOL
Seventies Soulchild: lol
vkn: oh dear Selma
Selma: Long day
Ingrid_Doweary: I understand Selma. You take care.
Seventies Soulchild: Nite Selma
3rdthawkins: she just recently found my post, she didn't know who I was or who my gr grandmother was, so she asked her aunt (her mother's sister), the aunt kept in close contact with my mother's mother and gave the poster her number, she called my grandma and asked if she had Hawkins grandchildren. Grandma called me because she didn't know who the person was, so I told her what was going on...........still helping her find her sister
vkn: You be dis generated I reckon Selma
3rdthawkins: more congratulations to Afrigeneas, it is there for a reason
deannie: ditto
Selma: vkn..I see daviss posted to links for articles on Rev Quarles
3rdthawkins: This is why you can't be afraid to post and give information, never know who could be reading it........
vkn: YES super great! Selma
Ingrid_Doweary: Vkn, I loved that video you recommended. The young brother was spot on about that 'historian' stereotyping person of African descent. He presented the true history of europenan and western colonization of indigenuous people. I Loved it.
Selma: The info on Rev Quarles is sketchy
vkn: Selma it would be interesting to learn if slave or free Oh the slap at Starkey, Ingrid.
Selma: According to article written in 1881 he was born a slave, taken to GA in 1850, became aminister in 1863..supposedly married in VA..(not sure how that worked since he was enlsaved)
vkn: Yes indeed it is sketchy Selma
Selma: a minister prior to emancipation...um...
Seventies Soulchild: at 13???
Selma: No he was already a grown man seventies
vkn: Exactly Selma timeline is whacky I did learn that Quarles is buried in the famous Atlanta Oakland Cemetery colored section
Ingrid_Doweary: Yes Vkn. I believe he set Starkey straight. Or at least told it like it was.
Selma: According to the article which was written in 1881 he was a faithful slave
vkn: oHHHH ok I saw article but not read as yet
Seventies Soulchild: Interesting... I am reading the South Carolina slave narratives right now. I'm going to have to start posting some of those narratives. Very interesting stories.
Selma: time for me to go folks...Good night
Ingrid_Doweary: I would appreciate you posting those, Seventies. There is a female ancestor who was said to be 12 yrs old at the time of emancipation.

3rdthawkins: bingo! there he is Ingrid lol wb jhonora
jhonora: Sorry y'all, had phone call
Ingrid_Doweary: wb Jhonora. I thought I missed you. LOL In researching my spouse's ancestor's civil war muster sheets, I found the surname spelled differently from month to month. I also realized according to the 1860 Schedule 1, he was a free person of African descent.
jhonora: I've seen mispellings also
Ingrid_Doweary: 1=I learned ...
jhonora: Where did he live? What was his name?
Ingrid_Doweary: Of course throughout family lore, the surname went through a number of spelling.....DOWEARY-Dow, Dowery, Dowry, Dowell. He was born in Maryland according to all of the census records (1860-1930). He lived into his 90s.
jhonora: Did he always live in Md? Were there any local lists/censuses/registers of free blacks
Ingrid_Doweary: It looks that way from the census records--mostly lived in Frederick County, MD. So far I've seen the Free inhabitants of the county. I still have a lot of research to cover.
jhonora: I know Frederick county has many published sources.
Ingrid_Doweary: Yes it does, I was just review the list of MD AA history sources this afternoon.
jhonora: Well you will have to keep us updated on what you find
Ingrid_Doweary: I did see a title for Free persons of African descent in MD from 1790 to 1860. Thanks Jhonora, it was good to converse with you Jhonora.
jhonora: I will catch up with you later! Great sharing this evening! Good night!
Ingrid_Doweary: Thanks good nite.
