Seventies Soulchild: great.. enjoying this seasonably mild weather.
alt: Oops, sound was down hello march1801 & Seventies Soulchild
Seventies Soulchild: Ha! Just got news we'll be getting off an hour early! :} Now things are just GREAT! lol Any new genealogical news?
march1801: glad to hear that
alt: just bits & pieces from surfin' the net Seventies Soulchild and reading a qrtly magazine that came in the mail yesterday reading the end of the log from yesterday I see that our 'new' person is from Columbus, OH
Seventies Soulchild: That was someone named Clark, right?
alt: right, lisa clark
Seventies Soulchild: I found a few very good articles on the Natchez Democrat yesterday alt.
alt: and I see she is around your age Seventies Soulchild
Seventies Soulchild: Names, places, events etc all family related.
alt: good Seventies Soulchild from what time period? is this in a 'social news' type column
Seventies Soulchild: The articles are within the past 10 yrs, but focus on historical items from WW I and WWII
alt: ah so, okay
Seventies Soulchild: I would say general local news. For example, McKinley Barnes a cousin was featured talking about his uncle who fought in WWI and the ongoing campaign to get his name on the veterans' plaque in Natchez Ser Boxley participated in this article as well.
alt: Boxley is a busy man LOL
march1801: brb
Seventies Soulchild: Also a story about the Watkins Cemetery which has been designated as a historical landmark because of the war veterans buried there. Yes he is... lol
alt: hello 3rdthawkins
Seventies Soulchild: hi 3rd
3rdthawkins: hello alt march and seventies
alt: is an AA newspaper or a 'mainstream' paper? is this
Seventies Soulchild: Also provided names of various organizations in the community. Mainstream paper. The black newspaper is the Bluff City Reader or something like that.
alt: okay Seventies Soulchild
Seventies Soulchild: And I have a copy at home, but I'm going to see if I can get some copies while visiting this summer.
alt: are they online?
Seventies Soulchild: I also pulled down my aunts online obit today and added in the death notices. No lol I keep adding to my to-do list for my week long trip to MS..
alt: you're gonna be 'busy', like Boxley LOL
Seventies Soulchild: Yes and I still want to attend the re-enactment he's putting on too... I doubt if there will be enough hours in the day! lol
alt: I only met him one time at an UGRR summit here in Ohio, he was one of the featured presenters But I keep in touch with him thru Bennie McRae, who he calls Nana Bennie
Seventies Soulchild: ok
march1801: im back. hello 3rd
alt: and a lady name Rene Shakespeare, or at least she uses that as a professional name.
Seventies Soulchild: BTW alt that thing about sending Thank You cards to these historical societies and clerks offices has been working so far... TY
alt: yw... yep a simple courtesy like that gets favorable responses. so 3rdthawkins what's happening in your world?
3rdthawkins: nothing much alt trying to keep up with these games
alt: why, you ususally have sumpin hot going LOL
3rdthawkins: well, Im trying out my new cpu
alt: ah so, an dupgrade, huh?
3rdthawkins: yep
alt: wonderful
3rdthawkins: research will be so much better, faster, and smoother
alt: access time... and connection?
3rdthawkins: yep plus I can hook up to an HDTV, so screen is bigger, pretty neat
alt: I probably need a newer desktop , my Dell is 6-7 years old.
march1801: hello selma
alt: ah ao, wonderful advances 3rdthawkins
3rdthawkins: hello Selma
alt: Hello Selma, how are ya today?

3rdthawkins: we talk about a small world, I was on FB yesterday and discovered a childhood friend of mine is friends (former college mate) with someone who happens to also be a friend of a 3rd cousin of mine, the cousin I just recently met, she keeps up with family research/history also
alt: have y'all ever looked at the AA Family History stuff @ the Newberry Library in Chicago?
Selma: Alt..does your relative still live around here? Can't remember her name
Seventies Soulchild: Hi Selma
alt: yeah 3rdthawkins the world is shrinking
Selma: Hi Soulchild
alt: the one in Silver Spring Selma, yep he is still there
3rdthawkins: hello daviss
alt: Hello daviss
march1801: afternoon daviss
Seventies Soulchild: alt, the IPAD will soon replace the netbook.... Hi daviss!
3rdthawkins: reminding me of my uncle that lives in SS, I am trying so hard to get in contact with him
Seventies Soulchild: Its 68 degrees today... :P
daviss: hello 3rd, alt, march, selma and seventies
Selma: Pretty warm here too seventies...think Spring has Sprung.. Hi daviss
Seventies Soulchild: I hope so, but we'll see...
3rdthawkins: even before 21? though we still are getting a little bit of winter, it is cloudy, don't think it is that cold though, it was nice yesterday I guess we are getting the other part of Spring, the rain
alt: oh, I'm sure on the Ipad Seventies Soulchild , technology is moving much too fast for me.
3rdthawkins: hello vkn
march1801: hi vkn
Seventies Soulchild: hi vkn
daviss: hi vkn!
alt: hello vkn, how be's ya?
Seventies Soulchild: I think desktops are pretty much obsolete unless you plan on using one as a server.
vkn: 3rd march alt daviss Selma seventies
alt: not for me Seventies Soulchild LOL
Seventies Soulchild: Question is tonight a new episode of WDYTYA???
Selma: I like my desktop...
alt: and I still have an 'A" drive for 3.5 in floppy's LOL
Seventies Soulchild: alt LOL
vkn: desktops are on the obsolete fast track
Seventies Soulchild: shoot CD's are making their way out rather quickly too
3rdthawkins: i'm thinking it is Seventies, not sure
Selma: Alt..I got a couple of disks I should send to you..
alt: jut saw on FaceBook where a lot of folks have "lost' lots of stuff that were on 3.5 and can't find a CPU with an 'A" drive to copy to copy to flashdrive or sumpin to save their data
Seventies Soulchild: In favor of flash drives
vkn: Many Atlanta area school systems are tossing computers as we know them and buying the iPads
alt: that' marketing for ya vkn, we've become a 'throw-away' society. we have a tendency to jump to something new without thinkg of a transition period
Seventies Soulchild: That's a shame, like I said, they can be turned into mini servers. IMO
vkn: Well alt transition is a double edged sword LOL
alt: it sure is vkn..and I'm getting 'cut' on by both sides
Selma: I would be putting down the IPAD and losing it in the house..like I do with my phones...I need something plugged in
alt: okay vkn... I would upgradee, but it is often a matter of money, money, money,
vkn: No Selma there is an app that says "find my ipad"
Seventies Soulchild: lol alt
vkn: alt did you ever see Brinks in a funeral procession lol lol lol
alt: nope vkn sure haven't LOL
3rdthawkins: think they still need to invent a device that will help find the remote to the tv
alt: Hello AYWalton
3rdthawkins: hello AY
AYWalton: Good afternoon all.
Seventies Soulchild: Maybe the kids and grandkids will chip in to get you an ipad alt :}

3rdthawkins: you're so quiet,..............no vkn
daviss: I was in late vkn
alt: just looked at Newberry's 98 page biblography of AA Family History,, some fantastic stuff ... and some very underutilized materials.
Seventies Soulchild: Is this on a website alt?
alt: not yet vkn on Lisa Clark...
AYWalton: is that the Newberry library alt?
alt: yes Seventies Soulchild, go to Newberry Library & AA bibliography
Selma: Hi AY
Seventies Soulchild: Got it. Thankss
alt: yes AYWalton it was initiallly done by Dee Woodtor & David Thackery
Seventies Soulchild: Interesting vkn. What were the main points?
AYWalton: lol
alt: yes vkn, that's interesting .. we're too 'new' to have a crisis... I think LOL
Selma: Jeez and I was so happy..
Seventies Soulchild: Selma, so many of ourelders are dying and taking that history with them. I see that as a crisis
AYWalton: another reason now to sing the blues!!! lol
Selma: Well that is for all groups seventies..
ProfDru: howdy gang
Seventies Soulchild: hi ProfDru
AYWalton: gonna fall outta bed now on my knees singing "Nobody Knows.......
vkn: Howdy ProfDru how did it go?
Selma: However ours do have a history..that this country would like to forget..
daviss: hi ProfDru
AYWalton: Prof Dru is in da house!!!
alt: vkn, is the article online?
Selma: Hi Dru..
3rdthawkins: black people always feel they're in a crisis
Seventies Soulchild: Considering that we are an oral based culture, I think that's a reasonable assessment. And I would also apply this to our culture.
alt: oh, Oops.... a conference call
ProfDru: heard back from Thomas about the webinar thing--FGS cannot do it because it would be a violaton of the TechSoup agreement. That's the one for $94 a year for nonprofits.
Seventies Soulchild: Selma we have a history and more importantly contrary to what the haters are saying, we have a culture
ProfDru: He has not heard back from Legacy and will follow up.
3rdthawkins: black people always seem to have haters also
Selma: I agree seventies..
vkn: Thanx Dru
ProfDru: He suggested that we might want to ask Michael Hait about doing webinars.
AYWalton: lol
daviss: lol @ ProfDru
alt: Lol @ ProfDru firing at the messenger
ProfDru: lol @ alt
Seventies Soulchild: lol alt
daviss: hehehehe
ProfDru: so I guess asking Michael is out? lol
vkn: I would not say that Dru
ProfDru: ok vkn
alt: Isn't Michael doing his thru the "Examiner" umbrella and as an APG member?
ProfDru: not sure alt
AYWalton: oh Lawd, call the EMT and revive that chile!
ProfDru: lol angela but she dead, angela, lol
Selma: LOL
AYWalton: no he is conducting his through the GoTo platform. maybe she's just in a coma, alt.
alt: okay AYWalton,
ProfDru: lol angela
vkn: We must focus permanent goals and not hold permanent friends or enemies Dru
ProfDru: ok vkn
Selma: That is true vkn..
ProfDru: so who knows Michael well enough to ask him?
AYWalton: ask him what?
Seventies Soulchild: brb having another birthday!
alt: Michael .. and others can do the Webinar thing as individuals much easier than AfriGeneas can as an 'entity' IMHO and knowing a little about the 501 (3) C) stuff
vkn: What is it we want to do is the question? What resources are needed? What do we need to do to acquire/utilize the resource etc
Selma: How until he came along...we were all looking for slave owners with the same surname's that we had..
alt: dunno bout that Selma
AYWalton: I think she was speaking tongue in cheek.
Selma: That was the gist of his first column in the examiner..I remember
ProfDru: gotta go to lunch. Adios.
3rdthawkins: bye PD
Selma: That all the presenters he had heard..were saying the same thing.. I wanted to know who he had been to hear
alt: that was sumpin' he found out about as his 'expertise' was being developed LOL
Selma: So he set him self up to enlighten us..
AYWalton: Yes it was the focus. Big revelation----don't assume slaves took the last name of the slave owner. Well, it was not such a big revelation as many of us already know.
alt: Gutman told us that was a 'myth' 20 years ago
AYWalton: he is offering a free webinar tomorrow on helping African American genealogists to break down their brick walls. tomorrow at 1pm EST.
daviss: oatmeal time for me
alt: heck, even I presented on that subject at the UNiv. Of Dayton for a History Conference in 1998

AYWalton: reminds me of Run Forrest Run!
daviss: better than Jesse
AYWalton: lol
3rdthawkins: speaking of Tyler, why does it seem every white kid named Tyler always gets into trouble
daviss: huh
