Hey 3rdthawkins Last night was spent watching the Rex Ball & Meeting of Courts on tv lol AYWalton: BTW I was watching some New Orleans webcams and I got to see St. Augustine's marching band in one of the parades! Impressive! so you had a sane evening, then. I can understand. jhonora: Yes, we've gotten a lot of attention from Carnival and from the corporal pun. issue, even CNN. AYWalton: lol howdy daviss! 3rdthawkins: hey daviss jhonora: Hello daviss AYWalton: so is there a different Rex every year? or is one designated as Rex till he dies? jhonora: A different King every year in every krewe and a different queen. AYWalton: I also saw the Zulu queen on one of the web cams as well. how are you doing, daviss? daviss: sorry how is everyone! AYWalton: fighting a cold, but otherwise ok. jhonora: I recently received another surname on my paternal side, Evans. AYWalton: oh that's nice---how did you come upon the new name, jhonora? 3rdthawkins: really? wow, cool jhonora AYWalton: is it a new maiden name of one of the female ancestors? 3rdthawkins: doing good daviss daviss: thats good jhonora ! great looking out jhonora: Yep, a maiden name for my gr-gr-grandmother Louisa Evans Nelson. 3rdthawkins: that's cool, now what time period are your great greats? AYWalton: where did she live, jhonora? Around those villes like Donaldsonville, etc? jhonora: I had to call a whole chain of relatives until I reached an "aunt" with the heaviest MS accent, from Shubuta. AYWalton: Isn't Shubuta in Noxubbe county MS? jhonora: Louisa's parents were Ceasar and Mariah Evans, both born ca. 1850. AYWalton: howdy alt!!! jhonora: It's in Clarke County, but it seems we have a Wayne Co. history too. 3rdthawkins: ok, jhonora...........hey alt AYWalton: ahhh ok. jhonora: Hey alt alt: hello AYWalton & y'all 3rdthawkins, daviss & jhonora AYWalton: that's neat. AYWalton: flooding is expected in the Carolinas I saw on the weather channel. vkn: well we are holding at 60 degrees alt but windy jhonora: Oh beaucoup de coo-zans, dozens. 3rdthawkins: ok vkn: fshowers bring flowers seventies 3rdthawkins: same here AYWalton: I have tons of 2nd and 3rd cousins and no first cousins. (Unless I could my dad's first cousins who would be 1st cousin once removed) vkn: yup sprung a spring leak 3rd Seventies Soulchild: You know I think all I have are cousins. :} 3rdthawkins: lots of cousins still alive, I talk to the oldest on my grandfather's maternal side. There's a cousin on his paternal side I talk to, wouldn't be the oldest though vkn: I saw those SC flood pics also ayw jhonora: I come from several lines of "old people's chirren" so the cousins are generally old enough to be aunts, uncles, parents. Seventies Soulchild: Me too jhonora 3rdthawkins: right, I think I see what you're saying AYWalton: ah yes, those chirren. Seventies Soulchild: I'm the baby of the grandchildren of my paternal grandmother... vkn: Discovery shuttle is being retired today and is on way to the Smithsonian Seventies Soulchild: Well the bunch of babies and we're all now in our 30's AYWalton: God Bless the chile that knows his own! (now who was that?) so jhonora were you in any of the parades? 3rdthawkins: hey Selma AYWalton: howdy Ms. Selma!! Seventies Soulchild: Speaking of the Smithsonian, I see Lonnie Bunch has been making his rounds on TV regarding the AA History museum Selma: Good Wednesday afternoon everyone.. vkn: thousand of sardines dead in Redondo Beach Calif AYWalton: I had not noticed, but that's good that he is making the rounds. that was strange. alt: hello Selma Seventies Soulchild: He was on C-Span, awarded on BET Honors and some other show that slips my mind. Hi Selma AYWalton: they said that they used up all of the oxygen in the water. hmm. AYWalton: I did a couple of posts on folks from the Territory. I hear ya alt----I have some kind of bug as well. alt: wanted to ask him about AA's and wagon trains going west in the 1850-1860's yatah: yea 3rd , two differnt alike black and mullo in 1900 and 1910 3rdthawkins: so no other records for Josephine that also show Ophelia as her name yatah? yatah: no record death as josephine vkn: Great AYW I see where Toni Carrier will be presenting on knocking down African American Brick Walls at NGS in Charleston. She is replacing Dr. Rose who continues in poor health yatah: i keep look up 3rdthawkins: in 1900, mainly they were listed as black no matter what, in 1910 and 1920 they were listed as mulatto however the enumerator saw them, and in 1930 also Neg/Negro in 1930 always listed as Neg(ro) AYWalton: oh she's taking his place? Sorry to hear his health is still a challenge. Where is he based? 3rdthawkins: you found her in 1930, right yatah? yatah: josephine on list 1930 with two son 3rdthawkins: ok vkn: He is now in Tampa AYW yatah: yes but yrs differnt too AYWalton: oh ok. yatah: 1895 3rdthawkins: yeah, that happens also alt: Selma, read the news about the VHS project on Early slave period for VA.. sounds great!!! Selma: Yes..I thought I sent that to you earlier in the week... alt: you may have and I overlooked it. AYWalton: I mentioned it last week's podcast as well. Selma: their guide to AA Manuscipts is already on line... yatah: so maybe i have follow that record 1910 bec have jospehine on list 1930 i have keep 1900 3 rd what you think ? Selma: Although I don't agree with Lauranett that the VHS is where you start alt: I'll go almost anywhere... back to ca 1735 & stuck LOL LOL 3rdthawkins: I would say they are the same person yatah, Mary only had 4 children who passed, all before 1900, nothing else seem to change Selma: You can go there alt..but not folks who are just starting... vkn: So who here is going to NGS? AfriGeneas will exhibit and hospitality with ProQuest yatah: ok i got josephine is nickname maybe 3rdthawkins: the only thing that changed is how many children she had since she had one more after 1900 alt: not me, can't make SC vkn Selma: Can't do it this year vkn.. AYWalton: would love to go, but don't think I will make it. You need bodies for the booth? Charleston is a great town, though. Selma: Angela..just got letter from Baltimore AAHGS about trip to Allen countty yatah: mean i have find all of children death record AYWalton: yes, they are planning to do a bus again. alt: for Ft. Wayne in Oct? AYWalton: but I would make sure they get a good bus. 3rdthawkins: probably no death records available for Orangeburg County yatah during that time, you can check AYWalton: don't know what that means for Little Rock in September. yatah: ok i will try Selma: That would be too out of the way for me AY...driving to B'more then taking a bus. vkn: Yes AYW Sadonya and Audrey are somewhat comitted and then there is Ft Wayne, Gwinett, FGS and ??? Seventies Soulchild: Ok bye.. have a good day all. :} AYWalton: I am thinking of flying. How did you go last time? 3rdthawkins: any guess on when Josephine would have died yatah? Selma: I flew... AYWalton: into what city? Selma: Are you going to Fort Wayne? AYWalton: Ft. Wayne has an airport? yes, I plan to speak---though they have not released a call for papers yet. Neither has AAHGS. yatah: 3rd, my aunt said josephine died after my aunt born 1949 i guess if in pa she died Selma: Yes, dru and i flew..went from here to Atlanta..then Ft. Wayne, or at least I think so.. LOL AYWalton: did you have real planes or did you have to fly those commuter planes? 3rdthawkins: ok, yeah, not sure if there are records available from PA during that time.....was it Philadelphia? yatah: my grandpa died in pa too norristown 3rdthawkins: norristown, what county is that? Selma: All I remember is we got there safe..and returned home safe...LOL AYWalton: but that does not answer the question---lol vkn: AYW are you coming to Gwinett yatah: called mong how spelling 3rdthawkins: montgomery? yatah: yea Selma: I think one plane was big..and one small...is that better 3rdthawkins: ok AYWalton: when, vkn? you mean next November? Selma: What is Gwinett? vkn: November 2011 AYW AYWalton: a commuter job, huh? My car is wider than those communter planes. They are too tiny and scary to me. oh yes, in November I will be there for the FHExpo, vkn vkn: GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT yatah: i do know my grandpa died what yrs is 3rd , 3rdthawkins: here's a website that might help yatah http://rwoc.montcopa.org/rwoc/cwp/view.asp?a=1498&q=44983 AYWalton: I would love to do Charleston, though. Such a great city. yatah: bec i there on funtral vkn: Let us talk about that later ayw AYWalton: sure thing. so daviss, do the west coast folks still have the summit in the non-Ft. Wayne years? 3rdthawkins: go to this site yatah, tells you all of the libraries for each county in PA, scroll down till you get to Montgomery County, will show all libraries in that county, go to each and see if they have obits/death records for the time period and see if you can request a look up. Probably will need to know at least the year she died.........wonder if she is in the SSDI, have you checked there? hello ProfDru AYWalton: ProfDru is in da house!! ProfDru: howdy gang Selma: Afternoon dru 3rdthawkins: oops, forgot to add site yatah http://www.publiclibraries.com/pennsylvania.htm alt: hello ProfDru vkn: howdy dru ProfDru: Angela in da house!!! I think it may be sumpin' I did 'wid my dumb self' AYWalton: thanks ProfDru. Ears are hurting as well as throat when I swallow. And alt has the flu. (I calling mine only a cold---but it might be a sinus infection.) 3rdthawkins: yatah, there's a link on that page that says Connect to then a link that says Library Web Site, click on that AYWalton: well I had better run, folks. have a good day everyone. take care. yatah: ok i got it vkn: sooooo many updates to FF alt it will not allow me to cut and past in chat BUT I must first make the text plain text and then it works alt: okay vkn... please don't fret.we'll find the problem thanks vkn vkn: ja velcom 3rdthawkins: hello free ProfDru: gotta run freeaainnc: hi all vkn: howdy free alt: hello freeaainnc Selma: Hi free..bye free yatah: what i need go there after i click libray web sdite Selma: Have to run folks..have a great day. 3rdthawkins: find their genealogy section yatah freeaainnc: which library? 3rdthawkins: if you can't find it, you can always call in PA free freeaainnc: oh, ok daviss: sorry I am in and out. The mechanic is outside fixing on my car vkn: free any feedback on the Duplin county attachments alt: keep your eye on him daviss LOL daviss: shade tree mechanic alt lol freeaainnc: not really! lol great info though alt: okay daviss vkn: alley mack huh daviss daviss: lol so this one good eye I have is zeroing in on him freeaainnc: lol why only 1 good eye? daviss: born that way free undeveloped pupil freeaainnc: didn't realize that. me too! blind in my left eye from a scratch on the retina alt: that sounds like me daviss 'undeveloped pupil' LOL daviss: but I see what I want to see with this good eye lol freeaainnc: it's like the 1 medical problem not related to my brain tumors! lol daviss: lol @ alt 3rdthawkins: you have that too daviss? freeaainnc: lol alt 3rdthawkins: though not sure if mine is underdeveloped you are blind also in your left eye free? freeaainnc: yes 3rdthawkins: that is interesting, I am also freeaainnc: and deaf to boot! lol 3rdthawkins: funny thing, I have slight hearing lost also daviss: left eye for me freeaainnc: me too daviss 3rdthawkins: is your whole left side weak daviss and free? daviss: oh alt I just got through with another blof for a uscc freeaainnc: not for me. actually its my right side that is, but it's from the brain tumors and sugary daviss: blog 3rdthawkins: hmm, yeah, my left side is weak really daviss: Milton Holland freeaainnc: lol at my typo "sugary" daviss: I will post shortly vkn: hmmmm I had wondered where your blogging was daviss 3rdthawkins: at first I thought that was everyone, but I realize I'm not able to use my left side real good like people are though they are right handed yatah: cool free you deaf ? daviss: I have been lazy vkn freeaainnc: yes yatah. we talked about that 1st time you came here daviss: This guy was actually born in Texas vkn lol freeaainnc: I went deaf age 18 vkn: ahhhhhhh daviss will still like your help with Palm Jones and his mother Roda yatah: oh i see i born deaf , free no unknow why daviss: I have actually still been looking vkn freeaainnc: yatah - I been trying to learn ASL for past 16 years and not able to find help. Finally found group deaf coffee chat meet right across street from where I live and learning fast yatah: oh i see i know esl and asl but i know almost asl vkn: That sounds great free no pun intended freeaainnc: yatah - some people just have birth defects like my blind eye, and for you, something did not develop right in your ear 3rdthawkins: that's why family history is so important, how parents definitely tell us who we are and why we are, why we are the way we are, why we have the problems we do, when bioological parents are not there, it's hard to understand ourselves. Also knowing aunts, uncles, grandma grandpa, cousins, etc., they also provide emotional support and support in other ways also yatah: oh i see 3rdthawkins: how-our parents freeaainnc: V: I love the group! we meet monthly and I look forward to it all month long! vkn: Maybe you can refer yatah free yatah: lol 3rdthawkins: free, are you totally blind or just blurry? you can see but not clearly freeaainnc: If yatah can come to Raleigh, NC this saturday, we are meeting then! daviss: gotta run folks 3rdthawkins: bye daviss yatah: i live in utah that from nc lol daviss: have a good day and I will post soon vkn alt: me too, time to scoot, laters ya'll freeaainnc: lol yatah - there may be groups where u are vkn: daviss I will be posting Palm to drickwall freeaainnc: go to meetup.com and find out yatah: my hubby hard of hearing 3rdthawkins: ain't that all of us men yatah, lol freeaainnc: 3rd I do have some sight, but no central vision in that eye lol 3rd!! 3rdthawkins: right, free, ok I see vkn: yatah you are near Salt Lake? freeaainnc: I have great peripheral vision in that eye which is good b/c I have non in the "good eye" 3rdthawkins: wow yatah: hey 3 rd , i look up 19 10 there anyting deaf in family vkn, i am 45 min away to slc' 3rdthawkins: would be a good idea to check yatah, but you should start with those closer to you. Like siblings, aunts uncles (maternal/paternal side), grandparents, any of them still living? vkn: Yall be good ok Yatah that is what I remembered. 3rdthawkins: ok vkn, c ya freeaainnc: bye V yatah: i look up on smith darby might be deaf i dont know bec i look up record said dumb or mutt on 1910 freeaainnc: dumb/mute means they can't talk 3rdthawkins: I didn't know where my condition came from until I after talking with my paternal aunt and my dad, a few siblings have it, especially one uncle who went totally blind, believe it comes from my grandparents being 1st cousins yatah: ohhh i see freeaainnc: but might mean they didn't learn because deaf hi Dru yatah: i got i learn something freeaainnc: some deaf considered "dumb" or mute because they never learned to talk 3rdthawkins: but yatah, different conditions and diseases can effect different people in different wayus ways...........also What Free just said yatah: i need find who might pass to mine i am born deaf 3rdthawkins: probably because they never learned to talk, you should look at those closer to you yatah yatah: ok my family all is hearing freeaainnc: yatah - some born deaf did not inherit from ancestors. can be a genetic mutation 3rdthawkins: agree free yatah: oh ok can be my mom side or my dad side family ? 3rdthawkins: yep yatah freeaainnc: yep, it could be either side 3rdthawkins: so none of your parents' siblings were affect in way one?..........were there any diagnoses when you were born? affeced affected freeaainnc: I have a genetic mutation 3rdthawkins: same here free yatah: none only one me born deaf none family freeaainnc: I have genetic disease neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2 for short) and no one else in family has that my brain tumors are from NF2 and I'm deaf from brain tumors 3rdthawkins: hmm, interesting, but no not everyone is going to be diagnosed with the same thing yatah: but my niece has lost hearing one ear one deaf and one hearing 3rdthawkins: on my dad's side, sons affected worse than the daughters freeaainnc: also, could inherit a recessive gene so others in family don't show the problem because they don't have 2 recessive genes, but if both mom and dad have the gene and pass onto a child, the child could have the disease (like sickle cell anemia) 3rdthawkins: my uncle has Retinitis Pigmentosa he went totally blind in his adult life yatah: what about sickle cell ? freeaainnc: yatah I'm saying sickle cell is a recessive gene. If both parents have the gene and pass onto a child, the child will have sickle cell anemia. but the parents don't have it, they are just a carrier. Same can be true for deafness see 3rd, I'm afraid I may go blind because of NF2 yatah: ok i have sickle cell that i found out on record freeaainnc: oh, ok yatah: nothing serious so freeaainnc: do you actually have sickle cell anemia or just a carrier of the gene? yatah: just a carrier freeaainnc: ok yeah so one of your parents is a carrier and passed on to you yatah: i have last two has carrier maybe my mom or my father freeaainnc: do you have sisters? yatah: an young children has carrier too yea i have one real sis and two half sister my father has 5 children freeaainnc: ok. your real sister. does she have the sickle cell gene? 3rdthawkins: I was diagnosed with Aarskog-scott syndrome, but the carrier is the mother who gives it to her sons, but no one on my mother's side has that yatah: i have no idea 3rdthawkins: none of my brothers have it, I am the only one, so wonder if both my parents had something yatah: my sisters hearing one in my family i am deaf freeaainnc: 3rd - no. men only have 1 x and 1 y chromosome. if they have a son, they pass on y chromosome only which is same for each child. 3rdthawkins: so free, if you are a carrier, that means you give it to your children, but if you are affected, your children may not be affected? ok free so I got it from my mother inherited freeaainnc: 3rd if you are a carrier of a recessive gene, and your partner is also, your child can have the disease, but if only you have the gene, then your child will only be a carrier does that answer your question? 3rdthawkins: I think freeaainnc: I love genetics, I considered being a genetic scientist as one point - it's the ONLY science I understand lol 3rdthawkins: my father has nightblindess as does his siblings, some are just blind like in their left eye and have droopy eyes like I do and weak on their left side..........my mother doesn't appear to have any medical history that she knows of yatah: i am deaf and it chance my kids will lost hearing later in future ? 3rdthawkins: it appears I got a lot from my dad's side, none of my siblings are/ have been affected. Even a doctor mentioned that it may have come from dad's side freeaainnc: 3rd - there are also dominant recessive genes which means the child only needs 1 gene yatah always possible. you said your husband is HOH? was he born that way? yatah: yea 3rdthawkins: ok free yatah: my hubby's brother hoh and his sister deaf last brother hearing 3rdthawkins: well, I had to have gotten something from my dad, like blindness, A-S-S doesn't cause blindness freeaainnc: 3rd - but there are also genes that are recessive and get stronger each generation they are passed to, like my NF2 does. a first generation carrier of the gene may not have any symptoms and next generation worse and so on. could be your mom is carrier, but she is first generation from a genetic mutation 3rdthawkins: probably free she never had a diagnoses or anything freeaainnc: well yatah, he if is HOH from a genetics, then it is possible to pass that on to kids, hereditary deafness is hard to predict outcome had she been tested? yatah: yes it from genetics on his side family 3rdthawkins: so, do you not think it came from dad's side free? yatah: mine i dont know freeaainnc: then it is possible yatah. I don't know 3rd. although I love genetics, I'm not a dr. or scientist so don't know enough to answer that yatah: ok mean i need look on my mom;s side family and dad's side who inherit deaf from? 3rdthawkins: ok free thx freeaainnc: brb yatah - this might help answer your question - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090209144255AAvb3Ce yatah: ok freeaainnc: not the best source - best source is to talk to your ear dr. or audiologist yatah - article that you might be interested in -http://deafmomworld.com/discovering-the-deaf-gene-in-my-family/ http://deafmomworld.com/discovering-the-deaf-gene-in-my-family/ yatah: both my hear deafstone ok thanks hope help me understand freeaainnc: no problem yatah here is a bit more information - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article1945864.ece yatah: profound hearing loss that i have freeaainnc: me too I need to go. lunch break is over. Bye! yatah: ok take car freeaainnc: you too! bye 3rd yatah: 3rd , i have check up history side of my family too 3rdthawkins: ok yatah gonna go, have a good day yatah: ok good day |
