jhonora: I had to call a whole chain of relatives until I reached an "aunt" with the heaviest MS accent, from Shubuta.

3rdthawkins: in 1900, mainly they were listed as black no matter what, in 1910 and 1920 they were listed as mulatto however the enumerator saw them, and in 1930 also Neg/Negro in 1930 always listed as Neg(ro)

3rdthawkins: go to this site yatah, tells you all of the libraries for each county in PA, scroll down till you get to Montgomery County, will show all libraries in that county, go to each and see if they have obits/death records for the time period and see if you can request a look up. Probably will need to know at least the year she died.........wonder if she is in the SSDI, have you checked there? hello ProfDru

3rdthawkins: that's why family history is so important, how parents definitely tell us who we are and why we are, why we are the way we are, why we have the problems we do, when bioological parents are not there, it's hard to understand ourselves. Also knowing aunts, uncles, grandma grandpa, cousins, etc., they also provide emotional support and support in other ways also

3rdthawkins: I didn't know where my condition came from until I after talking with my paternal aunt and my dad, a few siblings have it, especially one uncle who went totally blind, believe it comes from my grandparents being 1st cousins

freeaainnc: I have genetic disease neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2 for short) and no one else in family has that my brain tumors are from NF2 and I'm deaf from brain tumors

3rdthawkins: hmm, interesting, but no not everyone is going to be diagnosed with the same thing

yatah: but my niece has lost hearing one ear one deaf and one hearing

3rdthawkins: on my dad's side, sons affected worse than the daughters

freeaainnc: also, could inherit a recessive gene so others in family don't show the problem because they don't have 2 recessive genes, but if both mom and dad have the gene and pass onto a child, the child could have the disease (like sickle cell anemia)

3rdthawkins: my uncle has Retinitis Pigmentosa he went totally blind in his adult life

yatah: what about sickle cell ?

freeaainnc: yatah I'm saying sickle cell is a recessive gene. If both parents have the gene and pass onto a child, the child will have sickle cell anemia. but the parents don't have it, they are just a carrier. Same can be true for deafness see 3rd, I'm afraid I may go blind because of NF2

yatah: an young children has carrier too yea i have one real sis and two half sister my father has 5 children

3rdthawkins: I was diagnosed with Aarskog-scott syndrome, but the carrier is the mother who gives it to her sons, but no one on my mother's side has that

3rdthawkins: none of my brothers have it, I am the only one, so wonder if both my parents had something

freeaainnc: 3rd - no. men only have 1 x and 1 y chromosome. if they have a son, they pass on y chromosome only which is same for each child.

3rdthawkins: so free, if you are a carrier, that means you give it to your children, but if you are affected, your children may not be affected? ok free so I got it from my mother inherited

freeaainnc: 3rd if you are a carrier of a recessive gene, and your partner is also, your child can have the disease, but if only you have the gene, then your child will only be a carrier does that answer your question?

3rdthawkins: my father has nightblindess as does his siblings, some are just blind like in their left eye and have droopy eyes like I do and weak on their left side..........my mother doesn't appear to have any medical history that she knows of

3rdthawkins: it appears I got a lot from my dad's side, none of my siblings are/ have been affected. Even a doctor mentioned that it may have come from dad's side

freeaainnc: 3rd - there are also dominant recessive genes which means the child only needs 1 gene yatah always possible. you said your husband is HOH? was he born that way?

yatah: my hubby's brother hoh and his sister deaf last brother hearing

3rdthawkins: well, I had to have gotten something from my dad, like blindness, A-S-S doesn't cause blindness

freeaainnc: 3rd - but there are also genes that are recessive and get stronger each generation they are passed to, like my NF2 does. a first generation carrier of the gene may not have any symptoms and next generation worse and so on. could be your mom is carrier, but she is first generation from a genetic mutation

freeaainnc: well yatah, he if is HOH from a genetics, then it is possible to pass that on to kids, hereditary deafness is hard to predict outcome had she been tested?

yatah: yes it from genetics on his side family
